    by Patinho, Débora Mateus

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) should provide opportunities of research about teaching practice. Lesson Study (LS), being a highly specified form of classroom action research, can provide a context to promote meaningful learning and knowledge development (Leavy & Hourigan, 2016). This research aims to explore the development of mathematics and science pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of preservice teachers through a LS. The LS is focused on an interdisciplinary inquiry into biodiversity through the study of animal footprints. It was done in the ITE - Master degree - involving three courses: Didactics of Physics and Natural Science, Didactics of Mathematics and Supervised Teaching Practice. The LS participants were five preservice teachers, three professors of the higher education (HE) institution, one of mathematics education and two of science education, and four middle schools’ senior teachers of mathematics and science, responsible for the internship at their schools. This research followed the Dudley’s (2014) LS model and occurred in two cycles: research lesson 1 (RL1) and 2 (RL2). Data was collected through notes and audio recording of the RL planning, photos and audio recordings of the discussion sessions about the RL and notes from each classroom observation focusing on the pupils’ learning and progress. The three HE professors organized an initial discussion session about curriculum and didactics, followed by a focus in concrete contents of math and sciences, with an interdisciplinarity approach, and elaborated a first guide for an inquiry into biodiversity trough animal footprints. The inquiry’s aim was to determinate the area with more biodiversity through footprints collected in three different locations (areas A, B and C). Afterwards, they implemented the tasks with the preservice teachers. Then, the preservice teachers planned the RL1 of sciences and mathematics to implement with grade five students (10-12 years old). The activity contemplated tasks with laboratory work to explore animal footprints and math tasks to solve in classroom using elements collected about footprints. The RL were taught by one preservice teacher and observed by the HE professors, a senior teacher and the others preservice teachers. In a discussion session, the LS participants discuss their observations and reflections and identify some aspects for the RL improvement, concerning goals, tasks, resources, flow of the lesson and classroom’s disposition. In the second LS cycle, the RL2 was refined and implemented with another 10-12y student class. Then, it took place another discussion and a final refinement of the plan and resources of the RL. Concerning preservice teachers, the analysis of the recorded panel discussions showed that the LS promoted an effective development in their PCK. The preservice teachers: i) redesigned the RL and improved the tasks instructions with focus in the learning goals, ii) gained more conscious about the students’ thinking and how they apply their prior knowledge to understand the content of the lesson; iii) reflected about which questions engage students and facilitate their thinking; iv) gave more attention to the variety of strategies that helped or hinder students' learning.

    Publication
    by Duarte, Mário Jorge Mendes

Os gêneros registrados foram: Rugitermes Holmgren e Tauritermes Krishna (Kalotermitidae), Heterotermes Frogatt (Rhinotermitidae), Cornitermes Wasmann, Cortaritermes Mathews, Diversitermes Holmgren, Nasutitermes Dudley, Velocitermes Holmgren (Nasutitermitinae), Amitermes Silvestri, Microcerotermes Silvestri, Neocapritermes Holmgren, Termes Linné (Termitinae), Anoplotermes Muller, Aparatermes Fontes and Ruptitermes Mathews (Apicotermitinae) (Termitidae).

Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze., a native forest tree from Brazil, is under extinction risk. This tree depends on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for growth and development, especially in tropical low-P soils but, despite being a conifer, Araucaria does not form ectomycorrhiza, but only the arbuscular endomycorrhiza. This study aimed at surveying data on the spore density and root colonization (CR) by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Araucaria angustifolia forest ecosystems, in order to discriminate natural, implemented, and anthropic action-impacted ecosystems, by means of Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA). Three ecosystems representative of the Campos do Jordão (SP, Brazil) region were selected: 1. a native forest (FN); 2. a replanted Araucaria forest (R); and 3. a replanted Araucaria forest, submitted to accidental fire (RF). Rhizosphere soil and roots were sampled in May and October, 2002, for root colonization, AMF identification, and spores counts. Root percent colonization rates at first collection date were relatively low and did not differ amongst ecosystems. At the second period, FN presented higher colonization than the other two areas, with much higher figures than during the first period, for all areas. Spore density was lower in FN than in the other areas. A total of 26 AMF species were identified. The percent root colonization and spore numbers were inversely related to each other in all ecosystems. CDA indicated that there is spatial distinction among the three ecosystems in regard to the evaluated parameters.

The environmental issue is becoming a major component of the social debate. However, the means of its integration and its exact position within that debate remain to be fully appreciated. By identifying its principal features we should, nevertheless, be able to develop a set of central hypotheses. Using this framework, and by taking certain key questions into account, particularly those relevant to agriculture, we can describe in detail the situation in which French farmers may be involved, in a sociological sense, as environmental constraints develop. Our problem is to identify the right questions, rather than to begin to provide immediate answers.

Urban backyards have considerable potential for biodiversity conservation. However, these spaces are poorly planned, and there is little information about the diversity of flora present in the backyards of different social clases. We have quantified and compared plant diversity of the backyards of two neighborhoods in the metropolitan region of Maringá (Paraná, Brasil), by calculating diversity indices, bivariate correlations and potential of plantations. We have detected some remarkable differences in flora when compared groups of backyards from different social classes. In addition, we have developed guidelines for planning, with the aim of increasing the presence of woody vegetation and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, including the conservation of plant species in danger of extinction.

Ecosystem Based Adaptation: Concept and Terminology in Strategic Adaptation Planning (Municipal and Inter-Municipal) in Portugal

    Publication
    by Cousiño, Ana
    Other Authors: Penha-Lopes, Gil
Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) is a nature-based solution that has gained importance in the context of international climate policy, such as in the EU Adaptation Strategy (2013), which explicitly encourages its adoption and which should continue in The European Green Deal. This study aims to analyze how the EbA concept has been adopted in strategic adaptation planning at the municipal and intermunicipal levels in Portugal after the publication of the European adaptation strategy in 2013. Thus, a quantitative content analysis was carried out, based on EbA keywords, of municipal strategies and intermunicipal plans in Portugal. The term “ecosystem-based” has not been transposed as an explicit objective at the municipal and intermunicipal levels. All strategies and plans have included indirect references to the underlying elements of the EbA concept. This study highlights that although the EU Adaptation Strategy explicitly encourages EbA, this does not mean that it is adopted as a preferred adaptation approach at the local level in Portugal. The EbA seems to be more widely understood by the research community than by municipal technicians or private companies. It is necessary to explore how the EbA concept can be more widely accepted through the generation of co-benefits and by synergies between topics.

In the last ten years, a growing number of studies have focused on urban green areas as potential refuges for biodiversity, where private gardens, urban parks and green roofs have relatively high diversities of wild bees. However, the western Mediterranean is still poorly studied and is a biodiversity hotspot that is already suffering the consequences of climate change. It is essential to rectify this and understand how urban settings can support biodiversity. In this context, this study provides an assessment of the taxonomic and functional composition of bee assemblages in three allotments in downtown Lisbon, Portugal. Using only an entomological net, we collected 202 specimens from April to July 2018, belonging to fi ve families, 20 genera and 58 species, of which six are rare species in Portugal and nine fi rst records for the Lisbon district. Megachilidae was the most diverse family, comprising 15 species, while Apidae was the most abundant family. Most of the species identifi ed were solitary and had a generalist pollen diet, with a low incidence of social and parasitic species
