In this study, the effect of agitation and aeration rates on xylanase activity of Aspergillus niger SS7 in 3-litre stirred tank bioreactor was investigated. The agitation rates tested were 100, 200 and 300 rpm at each airflow rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 vvm. The maximum xylanase activity in mono- agitator system was at the agitation speed of 200 rpm and aeration rate of 1.0 vvm. In bi-agitator system, at low agitation speed (100 rpm), the xylanase activity was enhanced by 13% compared to mono- agitator system for an aeration rate of 1.0 vvm. Xylanase productivity in continuous culture was higher by approximately 3.5 times than in batch culture.

The production of xylitol from pentose-fermenting yeast is closely related to the amount of oxygen present in the culture medium. This study evaluated the effects of agitation and aeration in xylitol production using the yeast Starmerella meliponinorum FRP.09, previously isolated and selected due to its capacity to produce ethanol and xylitol from xylose. Fermentations were conducted in 125 mL flasks with 15 mL of culture medium and shaken at 150 rpm and 200 rpm without forced aeration and compared to fermentation in a static system. To assess the forced aeration, bioreactor was used with an air flow of 0.1 vvm and agitation of 100 rpm, 0.25 vvm / 150 rpm and 0.5 vvm / 200 rpm. Higher agitation and airflow significantly increased the xylose consumption. The yeast S. meliponinorum FRP.09 achieved the best xylitol yield of 0.6 g of xylitol per g of xylose consumed, when the fermentation was conducted with an air flow/rotation speed of 0.5 vvm / 200 rpm in bioreactor and 150 rpm in the fermentation flasks.

Large amounts of oily sludge are generated as residues by the oil industry, representing a real problem for refineries. This work studied the technical viability of treating oily sludge biologically, through stimulation of native microorganisms, at bench scale. Such microorganisms were able to grow in a medium containing oily sludge as the only carbon and energy sources. Two oily sludge concentrations were studied, 5% (v/v) and 10% (v/v), with a C:N ratio of 100:1. Higher microbial populations were observed in the first case. Substrate inhibition and/or toxic effect took place in the second case. The importance of aeration on the microbial activity and on the biodegradation of the residue was ascertained. In terms of n-paraffins, pristane and phytane consumption, maximum global efficiency of 76.9% (w/w) was achieved, in a medium containing 5% (v/v) of oily sludge. Bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas predominated. Two yeast species were also identified and two filamentous fungi were isolated.

Little is known about the power requirements of the exhaust fan throughout the composting period of a forced aeration systems. This study was conducted in order to adjust the variation curves for static air pressure, when forced into piles of organic material at different biochemical degradation stages. To that end, a composting pile with both sugarcane bagasse (BC) and poultry litter (CF) was stacked, by preparing the mixture in such a way as to obtain an initial C/N ratio of 30/1. The material was revolved every three days during the first month, followed by revolutions at regular 5-day intervals for two more months. Load loss was measured at 1m column height for the BC under the same conditions used in the mixture, as well as in the BC + CF mixture under the conditions at 30, 60 and 90 days of composting. The higher the specific air flow and the biochemical degradation time of the material under composting, the higher the decrease in the static pressure of the air insufflated in it. The Shedd model was well adjusted to the experimental data in the air specific flow range under investigation, and can be used to predict the static pressure gradients in organic compost

Air entrainment and pressure drop in low-cost ejectors

Abstract This study investigated experimentally the air entrainment and pressure drop in low-cost ejectors composed of two pieces shaped from PVC bars inserted in a 25 mm T-junction of the same material. The hydraulic behavior was very similar for the different ejector designs, and linear relationships between the water and air flow rates were fitted. However, when a rotameter was installed at the air line, the head losses resulted in a pronounced decrease (3-fold) in the air entrainment rate. The maximum air-water entrainment ratios reached by the low-cost ejectors was 1.7, while the pressure drop was about 80% of the upstream pressure. The results suggest that these ejectors have a better benefit-cost ratio than conventional ones for applications such as aeration and mixing in reactors, tanks and water bodies. Comparing our results with those obtained previously by using water both as primary and suction fluids, it was shown that under gas-liquid flow conditions the entrainment ratio was about 2.5 times larger than that for the single-phase case, while the pressure drop was about 15% higher. This was attributed to the lower density of the air and the higher dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy due to bubble-liquid interactions in the two-phase flow case.

Impact of artificial destratification on water availability of reservoirs in the Brazilian semiarid

    Publication
    by LIMA NETO,IRAN E.
    Origin: Oasisbr
Abstract: Field surveys and integral modelling were carried out to study the effect of bubble plumes on the flow hydrodynamics and the time-evolution of water temperature profiles in a shallow lake with maximum depth of about 4 m. Then, model simulations were performed to verify the feasibility of destratification of ten water-supply reservoirs with capacities of 10-2,000 hm3. Finally, hydrological modelling was conducted to assess the impact of destratification on evaporation suppression and its effects on reservoir yield. The results indicate that net temperature reductions of the order of 1.0°C can be obtained, which corresponds to evaporation suppressions of approximately 10%. In turn, this resulted in increases in the regulated flow of 2-12% that could be described by a general correlation. Lastly, a simplified feasibility analysis provided an operational cost of about 1.0 US$ per cubic meter of saved water, which suggests that artificial destratification cannot be discarded as an alternative for supplementing water supply in rural water-scarce regions.

Influence of mass transfer on bubble plume hydrodynamics

ABSTRACT This paper presents an integral model to evaluate the impact of gas transfer on the hydrodynamics of bubble plumes. The model is based on the Gaussian type self-similarity and functional relationships for the entrainment coefficient and factor of momentum amplification due to turbulence. The impact of mass transfer on bubble plume hydrodynamics is investigated considering different bubble sizes, gas flow rates and water depths. The results revealed a relevant impact when fine bubbles are considered, even for moderate water depths. Additionally, model simulations indicate that for weak bubble plumes (i.e., with relatively low flow rates and large depths and slip velocities), both dissolution and turbulence can affect plume hydrodynamics, which demonstrates the importance of taking the momentum amplification factor relationship into account. For deeper water conditions, simulations of bubble dissolution/decompression using the present model and classical models available in the literature resulted in a very good agreement for both aeration and oxygenation processes. Sensitivity analysis showed that the water depth, followed by the bubble size and the flow rate are the most important parameters that affect plume hydrodynamics. Lastly, dimensionless correlations are proposed to assess the impact of mass transfer on plume hydrodynamics, including both the aeration and oxygenation modes.
