Influence of upwelling and tropical environments on the breeding development of the intertidal barnacle Tetraclita stalactifera (Lamarck, 1818)

Differences in the distribution and abundance of Teredinidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) along the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil

Differences in coastal and oceanic SST trends north of Yucatan Peninsula
Publicationby Varela, R.Other Authors: Costoya, X.; Enriquez, C.; Santos, F.; Gómez-Gesteira, M.The coastal area north of Yucatan has experienced a cooling SST trend from 1982 to 2015 during the upwelling season (May–September) that contrasts with the warming observed at the adjacent ocean area. Different drivers were analyzed to identify the possible causes of that unusual coastal cooling. Changes in coastal upwelling and in sea-atmosphere heat fluxes are not consistent with the observed coastal cooling. The eastward shift of the Yucatan Current observed over the last decades is hypothesized as the most probable cause of coastal cooling. This shift enhances the vertical transport of cold deeper water to the continental shelf from where it is pumped to the surface by upwelling favorable westerly winds. -

Supply and larval traits at metamorphosis of a coastal marine invertebrate with a bi-phasic life cycle under contrasting oceanographic conditions
Publicationby Rey, FelisaOther Authors: Silva Neto, Gina M.; Bueno-Pardo, Juan; Bispo, Regina; Calado, RicardoPatterns of larval supply and larval condition at metamorphosis play key roles in the structure and dynamics of marine populations. Hence, biological and environmental conditions driving the dispersion of larval individuals, shape early life phenotypes, and influence their survival and post-settlement success. We performed a study over two consecutive years at Ria de Aveiro (Portugal), a coastal lagoon influenced by upwelling regimens in the North-eastern Atlantic. This study assessed the effect of contrasting oceanographic conditions on larval supply and larval traits at metamorphosis of the green crab Carcinus maenas. Crab megalopae were daily sampled and monitored in the laboratory until metamorphosis. Environmental conditions experienced by larvae in the field were estimated considering their expected planktonic larval duration, which was calculated for each individual using the size at metamorphosis and the average water temperature during larval development. Presence/absence, megalopa supply, and larval size were posteriorly modelled using generalized linear mixed models. The analysis of the two consecutive years showed haphazard patterns, revealing that both larval supply and phenotypic traits changed during and between supply seasons. The lunar cycle and environmental conditions were identified as drivers of the presence and supply of megalopae. Settlement events with weak upwelling index were influenced by sea temperature, while intense and constant upwelling events conditioned megalopa supply and performance at metamorphosis. In 2013, megalopae invaded the coastal lagoon in a more advanced physiological stage than in 2012 and/or under better nutritional conditions, probably due to stronger and more constant upwelling events during their pelagic larval life. Our results show that oceanographic processes stimulating upwelling and secondary production are sources of phenotypic variation at settlement, influencing both early benthic performance and adult population dynamics of marine organisms with bi-phasic life cycles. -

Publicationby Lopes, Francisco Manuel TavaresThe study of spatial and temporal variability in the upwelling processes that occur along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula (IP) is based on the data analysis from the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). This analysis was carried out through the assessment of the model’s results with the comparison between observational data for the zonal and meridional components of the wind at 10m, during the reference period of 1989-2007. Overall, the model represents well the monthly and seasonal observations patterns. The model’s high resolution (9 km) allows a good characterization of the main costal zones that are under strong wind intensification, showing a spatial heterogeneity that stands out in comparison with the local observations. In addition, the interaction between the wind flows and the local orography (i.e., coastal lines) is well represented unlike the observed uniform flow. The upwelling index (UI) formulation consists on the components of the Ekman transport that are perpendicular to the shoreline. In the summer, the results show a high occurrence of upwelling events on the Western coast and also on the Southern coast, although with less intensity, while on the North coast there’s a weak occurrence of downwelling. On the other hand, in the winter there’s more predominance of coastal downwelling episodes, although the observations indicate the possibility of a weak occurrence of upwelling in the South region of the IP. -

The Emergence of Muge Mesolithic Shell Middens in Central Portugal and the 8200 cal yr BP Cold Event
Publicationby Bicho, NunoOther Authors: Umbelino, Cláudia; Detry, Cleia; Pereira, TelmoThe emergence of Portugal’s Muge Mesolithic, with its characteristic shell middens and human burials, is widely seen as a response to the formationofahighly diverse terrestrialandaquatic ecotone inthe Tagus basin by the Flandrian transgression. Recently, some have suggested that this was an adaptive response to the 8200 cal yr BP event. Using the available radiocarbon data for the shell middens, paleoclimatic data, and paleoceanographic datawe present anewmodel for the appearance of the Muge Mesolithic shell middens and changes in settlement between the Boreal and Atlantic phases for central Portugal. Coastal ecosystems were altered due to diminution in upwelling and the occurrence of the 8.2 kyr cold event, with declining availability of marine resources, rapid sea level rise, and changes in coastal morphology. The result was that the previous coastal setting was no longer suitable for the hunter-gatherer-fishers causing a settlement shift to the new, large and stable estuary of the Tagus Valley. -

Suspended particulated matter dynamics and related oceanographic processes in the Moroccan NW shelf (between 34ºN and 35.5ºN parallels)

The use of circulation weather types to predict upwelling activity along the western Iberian Peninsula coast
Publicationby Ramos, Alexandre M.Other Authors: Pires, Ana Cordeiro; Sousa, Pedro M.; Trigo, Ricardo M.Coastal upwelling is a phenomenon that occurs in most western oceanic coasts, associated with coastal surface water divergence and consequent ascension of colder and nutrient-rich waters from deeper levels. In this work, we evaluate the intra- and interannual variability of the upwelling index (UI) off the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula considering six locations at various latitudes along the 10°W meridian: Rias Baixas (42°N), Aveiro (41°N), Figueira da Foz (40°N), Cabo da Roca (39°N), Sines (38°N) and Sagres (37°N). In addition, the relationship between the variability of the occurrence of several circulation weather types (CWTs) and the UI variability along this coast was assessed in detail, allowing to discriminate which types are frequently associated with strong and weak upwelling activity. It is shown that upwelling activity is mostly driven by wind flow from the northern quadrant, for which the obtained correlation coefficients (for the N and NE types) are higher than 0.5 for the six considered locations.Taking into account these significant relationships, we then developed statistical multi-linear regression models to hindcast upwelling series (April-September) at the referred locations, using monthly CWTs frequencies as predictors. Modeled monthly series reproduce quite accurately observational data, explaining more than 60% of the total variance, presenting skill-scores against the climatology also above 60%, and having relatively small absolute errors. However, despite the ability of our models in representing the interannual variability of UI, they do not reproduce accurately most UI peaks, that occur typically in July. This may be due to the role played by mesoscale phenomena not represented in the statistical models, namely sea breezes that result from the intensified thermal low, which enhances coastal meridional winds and hence upwelling. -

Seasonal cycle of plankton production in the Iberian margin based on a high resolution ocean model
Publicationby Reboreda, RosaOther Authors: Nolasco, Rita; Castro, Carmen G.; Álvarez-Salgado, Xosé A.; Cordeiro, Nuno G. F.; Queiroga, Henrique et al.The seasonal variability of plankton in the entire Iberian margin and the adjacent oceanic region was simulated by applying a NPZD-type biogeochemical model coupled to a physical high resolution configuration of the 3D Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The NPZD model simulated the time and space evolution of nitrate, phytoplankton/chlorophyll, zooplankton and detritus. Model results were compared to remotely sensed sea surface temperature from AVHRR, mixed layer depth from ARGO floats, and sea surface chlorophyll-a from a monthly SeaWiFS climatology. The model was able to reasonably reproduce the seasonal cycle of phytoplankton biomass in the Iberian Atlantic margin and the adjacent oceanic region. It allowed us to make a general characterization of the spatio-temporal patterns of phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass, as well as detritus and nitrate distribution. However, some limitations in the model were revealed by the Taylor Diagrams analysis. The model seemed to overestimate the offshore spring phytoplankton bloom and the upwelling-related coastal maxima of chlorophyll-a in the shelf. On the other hand, winter chlorophyll-a decrease simulated by the model over the shelf agreed with in situ samplings reported in the literature, contrasting with the high chlorophyll-a estimations of satellite data. This evidenced that care should be taken when validating model results in the Iberian coastal region using satellite chlorophyll-a products, particularly in winter. -

Distribution of living planktonic foraminifera in relation to oceanic processes on the southeastern continental Brazilian margin (23°S-25°S and 40°W-44°W)
Publicationby Sousa, S. H. M.Other Authors: de Godoi, S. S.; Amaral, P. G. C.; Vicente, T. M.; Martins, M. V. A.; Sorano, M. R. G. S. et al.The vertical distribution (0 to 100m) of planktonic foraminifera was investigated based on 40 tow samples that were collected in eight stations, during the austral summer of 2002, in a geographically restricted area (23°S-25°S and 40°W-44°W) on the southeastern Brazilian continental margin. Species' abundances are low (less than 10 specimens/m3), which is typical of an oligotrophic area. The foraminifera assemblage is mainly composed of warm water species (Globigerinoides ruber white and pink forms), with a predominance of spinose and symbiont-bearing species. Temperature and inorganic nutrient enrichment of the surface are the main factors that control foraminiferal abundance and diversity; nevertheless salinity can also influence the ecological descriptors. The role of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) in the distribution of foraminifera is not always clear, but the increase in the abundance of G. ruber (white and pink) seems to be related to a deeper DCM, and high salinities (S>36.5). The ecological habitat of these species is affected by the depth of the mixed layer, with a predominance of the white form in deeper layers. Increases in the foraminiferal diversity are related to the dynamics of the Brazil Current system, which displaces the area of high productivity in the euphotic zone off the coast. The abundances of Globigerina bulloides, Globigerina falconensis, Globigerinella calida and Globigerinella siphonifera follow the nutrient enrichment of the surface water mass, corroborating the usefulness of these species as paleoproductivity proxies in the study area. These data confirm the use of diversity measurements and assemblages composition for reconstructing past water column structures in subtropical oceans.
