Parenthood and everyday mobilities in Portugal: a gender approach
Publicaçãopor Schouten, Maria Johanna ChristinaOutros Autores: Las Heras, SoledadOrigem: uBibliorumThe spatial transition of individuals and their families between the different contexts of home, work/school, and leisure activities, as well as the time spent during this «interface», are attracting growing attention from sociologists. The main subject of the present study relates to the transportation of children to and from day-care, school or extracurricular activities, and the strategies mothers and fathers apply to managing this routine form of mobility. In an analysis of the various dimensions of this parental task, attention is paid to the central place children occupy in today’s families, strengthening parents’ protective instincts. The data presented come from a study of households in two zones in Portugal with diverse geographical and demographic characteristics. The quantitative and qualitative data indicate differences between men and women in types and patterns of mobility, and also in the access to and use of means of transport. The daily school run, in its broadest sense, can be taken as an activity pertaining to the domain of «caring» and to a certain extent this is reflected in its gendered character. -

Technology, time allocation and gender in Portugal
Publicaçãopor Schouten, Maria Johanna ChristinaOrigem: uBibliorumSeveral studies have suggested that the development of technologies such as household appliances, ICT and means of transport have not necessarily reduced the time spent on household and caring work and that the role of these technologies as facilitators of a balance between work, family and private life is modest. In the study presented, the possible relationships were examined between technology use and time allocation in households, focusing the gender factor. The research was carried out in two different regions in Portugal and involved a questionnaire survey among 430 couples, various focus group sessions and in-depth interviews. Three of the main results will be discussed. The first addresses the diffuse character of the effects of home-centered technologies on the execution and duration of domestic chores and caring tasks. The second is the technology-induced higher permeability between the domestic, personal and professional domains, which may be salutary but also stress-provoking. The third point to be made is the limited change technologies brought about in the gendered allocation of domestic work. These results confirm the assumption that it is not technology which brings about social change but rather the mutual interaction between technology and social context. It may be concluded that gender roles and gender identity are major factors affecting the perception and use of time and technology. The artefact does not define the use, but the use defines the meaning of the artefact, and the gender of the user is here of great importance. -

Chauffeuring parenthood: the everyday travel times of families
Publicaçãopor Schouten, Maria Johanna ChristinaOutros Autores: Las Heras, SoledadOrigem: uBibliorumThe time parents dedicate to the routine transport of their children has increased significantly since the second half of the twentieth century. This change was triggered by various developments, including new forms of parenthood, the central place the car has come to occupy in society and the tendency to urban dispersion. The article addresses the coordination efforts made by families to provide transport for their children to and from schools, nurseries or extracurricular activities. It focuses on the meaning parents attribute to the time spent on this transport, and on gender differences in this type of time allocation. To illustrate this point, analyses have been made of qualitative and quantitative data obtained in the context of a research on the use of time and technology in families, in the Portuguese districts of Castelo Branco and Braga, during the period 2010‐12. The principal revelations of this research are the diversities but also general trends in representations and practices regarding temporalities and transport shown in interviews and focus group discussions. It was found that parents interviewed considered time devoted to routine transport of their children a care task; and, linked to this, mothers bore the brunt of this fragmented and time-consuming activity -

The gender(ed) division of labour in Europe: patterns of practices in 18 EU countries
Publicaçãopor Atalaia, SusanaOutros Autores: Cunha, VanessaDrawing on cross-national data from ISSP 2012, this paper aims to identify and characterize the patterns of gender division of labour in European families with children. Analysis focuses on gender role practices at country level, assuming that welfare regimes frame the gendered allocation of time to paid work, care work and household work. From a cluster analysis based on time-use (weekly hours and sex asymmetries) in 18 EU countries, six patterns are identified. Findings disclose the relevance of disentangling care work from household work in order to understand in more detail the diversity of patterns across Europe. -

Exploring the role of time in access to culture: a theoretical analysis of socioeconomic factors
Publicaçãopor Monteiro, DanielaOutros Autores: Araújo, EmíliaAccess to culture has been a topic of discussion from several perspectives, namely the importance of democratizing cultural spaces through accessible or free admissions to avoid barriers for low-income people. However, time and the uses of time are critical dimensions in this discussion. In this regard, this study addresses the issue of time poverty, free time and the time constraints faced by economically vulnerable populations, which may hinder their engagement in cultural and leisure activities. Furthermore, it highlights the need to theoretically explore the interaction between time use and socioeconomic factors, such as economic status, social class, employment, and gender. The paper proposes a theoretical approach that considers the interaction between leisure time use and socioeconomic factors, aiming to deepen our understanding of accessibility issues in cultural engagement for populations with limited economic resources. By doing so, the study intends to contribute to the ongoing debate on the democratization of culture and the reduction of access inequalities, recognizing the fundamental role of time in shaping the cultural experiences of these populations. Through an integrated analysis of free time and its socioeconomic determinants, the research seeks to identify and comprehend vulnerable populations' barriers to accessing culture. This theoretical understanding is crucial for informing the development of inclusive cultural policies that promote equitable and broader participation in cultural and leisure activities, enabling all individuals to enjoy their cultural citizenship fully. The study employs a literature review methodology to synthesize existing research, critically evaluate key concepts and theories, and identify gaps and areas for further investigation. By examining a range of scholarly works, this research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge landscape and generate insights to inform future research and policy development in this field. -
