The need to overcome logistic and ethical limitations of in vivo nanotoxicity evaluation in marine organisms is essential, mostly when dealing with fish. It is well established that medium/solvent conditions affect dispersion and agglomeration of nanoparticles (NPs), which represents a constraint towards a solid and realistic toxicity appraisal. In this way the pros and cons of an ex vivo approach, using a simplified exposure medium (seawater) and addressing gills histopathology, were explored. The nanotoxic potential of environmentally realistic concentrations of titanium dioxide NPs (TiO2 NPs) was also assessed, disclosing the morpho-functional effects on the gills and the possible uptake/elimination processes. Excised gills of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) were directly exposed in artificial seawater to 20 and 200 μg L-1 TiO2 NPs, for 2 h and 4 h. Semi-quantitative and quantitative histological analyses were applied. The normal morphology of the gill's epithelia was only slightly altered in the control, reflecting protective mechanisms against the artificiality of the experimental conditions, which, together with the absence of differences in the global histopathological index (Ih), corroborated that the gill's morpho-functional features were not compromised, thereby validating the proposed ex vivo approach. TiO2 NPs induced moderate severity and dissemination of histopathological lesions. After 2 h, a series of compensatory mechanisms occurred in NP treatments, implying an efficient response of the innate defense system (increasing number of goblet cells) and effective osmoregulatory ability (chloride cells proliferation). After 4 h, gills revealed signs of recovery (normalization of the number of chloride and goblet cells; similar Ih), highlighting the tissue viability and effective elimination and/or neutralization of NPs. The uptake of the TiO2 NPs seemed to be favored by the higher particle sizes. Overall, the proposed approach emerged as a high-throughput, reliable, accurate and ethically commendable methodology for nanotoxicity assessment in marine fish.

ABSTRACT: Various strategies such as heterostructuring, crystal/textural modifications and band gap engineering, have been applied to the improvement of the photocatalytic activity of Titania for hydrogen production from water splitting. In this work deposited Pt on TiO2 is used as electron trap to suppress charge recombination. To reinforce this effect, composites with graphene oxide (GO) have been prepared, exhibiting promising photocatalytic performance for both hydrogen generation and the degradation of ethanol added as hole scavenger. Photocatalytic reactions were conducted in gas and liquid phases.

ABSTRACT: The mode of action for nanoparticle (NP) toxicity in aquatic organisms is not yet fully understood. In this work, a strategy other than toxicity testing was applied to Daphnia magna exposed to TiO2-NPs: the use of nuclear microscopy and the assessment of protein profile. D. magna is a keystone species broadly used as a model system in ecotoxicology. Titanium (Ti) was found in the D. magna digestive tract, mainly in the gut. The penetration of Ti into the epithelial region was greater at higher exposure levels and also observed in eggs in the brood pouch. The protein profile of individuals exposed to different concentrations showed that 2.8 and 5.6 mg/L TiO2-NP concentrations induced an over-expression of the majority of proteins, in particular proteins with molecular weight of similar to 120, 85 and 15 kDa, while 11.2 mg/L TiO2-NP had an inhibitory effect on protein expression. The Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization with tandem time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS) analysis of these proteins consistently identified them as vitellogenin (Vtg)-like proteins, associated with enzymes involved in redox balance. These results indicate that Vtg-like proteins are up-regulated in D. magna exposed to TiO2-NPs. Vitellogenesis is associated with the reproduction system, suggesting that TiO2-NP exposure can impair reproduction by affecting this process. The precise mode of action of TiO2-NPs is still unclear and the results from this study are a first attempt to identify specific proteins as potential markers of TiO2-NP toxicity in D. magna, providing useful information for future research.

ABSTRACT: The production of hydrogen by photocatalysis presents attractive features but also stringent requirements of materials properties. A series of TiO2-based photocatalysts containing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and plat-inum, TiO2-rGO(x)-Pt(y) (x=0-5 wt%; y=1.5, 2.5, 3.8 wt%), were synthesized by a simple two-step procedure. The ternary composites exhibited promising performance for hydrogen generation, in both liquid and gas phase photocatalysis, using ethanol as hole scavenger, under UV light. The effect of the concentration of ethanol, graphene oxide, and Pt, as well as photocatalyst loading and solution pH were assessed. The photocatalyst TiO2-rGO3%-Pt3.8%, in the liquid phase, produced gases containing over 95% hydrogen at very high initial pro-duction rates, similar to 560 mmolh(-1)g(cat)(-1). The gas production vs irradiation time (6 h) showed linear dependence in a two-slope graph, with a drastic decrease of the rate due to Pt poisoning. Solution pH reached values of 3.5, regardless of the initial value. In the liquid phase, partial oxidation of ethanol took place with the dehydroge-nation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. In the gas phase photocatalysis, TiO2-rGO3%-Pt3.8% showed capability for photo-reforming as indicated by produced gases with a molar ratio H-2/CO2 of 3. rGO reinforces the effect of Pt as a suppressor of charge recombination.

ABSTRACT: Photoreforming has emerged as a novel technology expected to obtain chemical energy through solar energy transformation. In this way, sustainable valorization of glycerol, a biodiesel by-product, to clean fuels is a promising alternative to help meet the world's growing energy demand. In this work, TiO2/rGO(x)/Pt(y) photocatalysts have been developed for hydrogen production from synthetic and crude glycerol solutions. The effect of several key operating parameters (including vol% of glycerol, pH, catalyst loading, wt% of GO, wt% of Pt, temperature, and light source) on hydrogen production rate has been studied. The results indicated different optimal operating parameters depending on glycerol origin, achieving up to 70.8 and 12.7 mmol h(-1) g(-1) of hydrogen using synthetic glycerol and crude glycerol, respectively. Additionally, GO nanosheets and Pt nanoparticles strongly influenced the hydrogen production rate but not the overall reaction mechanism. Impurities contented in crude glycerol are key factors in developing realistic hydrogen production processes.

Abstract TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by sol-gel methods using two different precursors, titanium tetraisopropoxide and potassium titanium oxalate (KTO). The precursors had a profound influence on the structural, morphological, dielectric and magnetic properties of synthesized TiO2 NPs, as evidenced by the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, LCR and VSM studies in the synthesized samples. Alkoxide-derived TiO2 NPs contained mostly mixed phases of anatase and rutile, whereas KTO-derived TiO2 NPs contained anatase and Magnéli phases (TinO2n-1). After heat treatment at 550 °C, the crystallite size of KTO-derived NPs was lower than alkoxide-derived TiO2 NPs. The synthesized nanoparticles were spherical and agglomerated having anatase and rutile phases with different proportions in the microstructure of the alkoxide sample. Dielectric constant of the KTO-derived NPs was higher than the alkoxide-derived NPs. Diamagnetic behavior of KTO-derived NPs was also higher than the alkoxide-derived TiO2 NPs.
