The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of depth on drag during the streamlined glide in swimming using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The Computation Fluid Dynamic analysis consisted of using a three-dimensional mesh of cells that simulates the flow around the considered domain. We used the K-epsilon turbulent model implemented in the commercial code Fluent(®) and applied it to the flow around a three-dimensional model of an Olympic swimmer. The swimmer was modeled as if he were gliding underwater in a streamlined prone position, with hands overlapping, head between the extended arms, feet together and plantar flexed. Steady-state computational fluid dynamics analyses were performed using the Fluent(®) code and the drag coefficient and the drag force was calculated for velocities ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 m/s, in increments of 0.50m/s, which represents the velocity range used by club to elite level swimmers during the push-off and glide following a turn. The swimmer model middle line was placed at different water depths between 0 and 1.0 m underwater, in 0.25m increments. Hydrodynamic drag decreased with depth, although after 0.75m values remained almost constant. Water depth seems to have a positive effect on reducing hydrodynamic drag during the gliding. Although increasing depth position could contribute to decrease hydrodynamic drag, this reduction seems to be lower with depth, especially after 0.75 m depth, thus suggesting that possibly performing the underwater gliding more than 0.75 m depth could not be to the benefit of the swimmer.

Emerging Digital Media, Games and Simulations: A Challenge for Open and Distance Learning

    Publication
    by Bidarra, José
In this article we examine the state-of-the-art research related to digital media in education and evaluate the information concerning a new generation of students that are community-minded and technologically savvy, highlighting the innovative technology behind the new interaction and communication processes, and assessing the challenges for Open and Distance Learning (ODL). Where traditional distance education is based on the completion of carefully graded assignments and tests, today games, simulations and virtual environments may become safe platforms for trial and error experimentation. With games the chance of failure is high, but the cost is low and the lessons are learned immediately and with greater emotional impact. However, these conditions may become more difficult to address when the volume of users increases from small to medium, large or extra-large. Dealing effectively with tens or even hundreds of thousands of students in absentia requires following very sound organizational principles and good technical implementation, systematic monitoring of deviations from established norms, regular audition of users' comments and criticisms, careful analysis of final results. In this emerging scenario, involving digital media, games and simulations, ODL systems must have means of establishing rich connections with each member of the universe of users. In this sense we propose using a virtual space with multiple places, in ways that use the Internet, social applications, games and mobile devices to involve students in pedagogical activities.

Phylogenetic information has increasingly been included in studies of local communities and also at broad spatial scales. Despite recent criticisms in the last four years, phylogenetic relationships may still provide insights into the organization and assembly of ecological communities. The objectives of this study were 1) to review the history of the use of phylogenetic information, as well as criticisms and perspectives of its use in community ecology; 2) understand how the size and shape of phylogenetic trees and the phylogenetic structure of metacomunidaes affect the amount of variation accounted for by a eigenvector-based method used to describe the phylogenetic composition of metacomunidaes (PCPS); 3) to test the effect of diversity of evolutionary history (MNTD and MPD) and species richness as predictors of three variables of freshwater ecosystem functioning (productivity, respiration, and decomposition); and finally 4) to test how environmental gradients, especially pond canopy cover, influence the phylogenetic structure of an anuran metacommunity from southeastern Brazil. I found that the structure of metacommunities had greater impact on eigenvalues of PCPS than tree shape metrics, such as symmetry and stemminess. In addition, decomposition and respiration were best predicted by MNTD as a linear function, while productivity was affected by the quadratic term of MNTD. Finally, pond canopy cover and floating vegetation strongly affected the phylogenetic structure of the anruan metacommunity, influencing lineage sorting. These findings 1) can help users interpret the results of PCPS; 2) provide better understand of the effect of species loss in multitrophic, freshwater ecosystems; and 3) improve our knowledge about the effect of canopy cover on the lineage composition in anuran metacomunities.

    Publication
    by Hashimoto, Clayton Veríssimo
    Origin: Oasisbr

Detection of software supply chain attacks in code repositories

    Publication
    by Correia, Miguel Luís Pereira
Nowadays, the supply chain concept is something intrinsically deep-rooted in the software development life cycle; from the source code and dependencies that are inserted into the software, to its release. With the growing need to shift security left in the development, every step, and material that influences software needs to be secured. However, not all phases within the software supply chain are protected, and malicious actors exploit this lack of security to insert malicious code in the software code repositories. Through account takeovers, attackers can introduce themselves in the code repositories, and with meticulous planning create trojanized software. The 2019 SolarWinds attack is a perfect example that shows the extent that supply chain attacks can have. This dissertation is presented how malicious actions in the repositories can be classified as anomalies within the developers’ behaviours. From the users’ actions in the repositories, metrics are calculated and utilized to create behaviour profiles that are then used to detect anomalous behaviours.

Virtual Reality Laboratories (VRLs) are essential progress towards educational solutions that would allow students to learn the sometimes complex experimental processes without spending physical resources. The resources used in some experiments often require significant procurement effort, significantly impacting the environment where an experiment would be conducted. The main focus of this research is to review the possibility of using VR solutions as educational tools and innovative approaches to scientific knowledge production. This paper systematically reviews relevant publications in this area while covering several existing virtual lab solutions. The analysis shows that VRL tools can be effectively used for educational purposes, allow access to lab resources for people with disabilities, and could be used to reach the desired learning outcomes. A gap exists between natural laboratories and VRLs, especially in the collaborative aspect of the laboratory exercises. However, there is significant ongoing research on this topic and a high potential for development.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer in women, with around 660,000 new cases in 2022. In the same year, about 94 percent of the 350,000 deaths caused by cervical cancer occurred in low- and middle-income countries. This paper focuses on the dynamics of HPV by modeling the interactions between four compartments, as follows: S(t), the number of susceptible females; I(t), females infected with HPV; X(t), females infected with HPV but not yet affected by cervical cancer (CCE); and V(t), females infected with HPV and affected by CCE. A compartmental model is formulated to analyze the progression of HPV, ensuring all key mathematical properties, such as existence, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness of the solution. The equilibria of the model, such as the HPV-free equilibrium and HPV-present equilibrium, are analyzed, and the basic reproduction number, R0, is computed using the next-generation matrix method. Local and global stability of these equilibria are rigorously established to understand the conditions for disease eradication or persistence. Sensitivity analysis around the reproduction number is carried out using partial derivatives to identify critical parameters influencing R0, which gives insights into effective intervention strategies. With appropriate positivity, boundedness, and numerical stability, a new stochastic non-standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is developed for the proposed model. A comparison analysis of solutions shows that the NSFD scheme is the most consistent and reliable method for a stochastic fractional delay model. Graphical simulations are presented to provide visual insights into the development of the disease and lend the results to a more mature discourse. This research is crucial in highlighting the mathematical rigor and practical applicability of the proposed model, contributing to the understanding and control of HPV progression.

Other Authors: Barraca, João Paulo; Gomes, Diogo; Aguiar, Rui L.
Mobile Internet penetration has grown steadily over the last few years. Although most of today’s users have access through their 3G Mobile Operators, there are still regions that are under-covered for various reasons. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) can play an important role by providing the means to fully cover those underserved regions. Due to their intrinsic nature, WMN require a critical mass of nodes belonging to the mesh in order to be effective. In this paper we present a study conducted in Aveiro, Portugal which intends to draw some conclusions on the feasibility of deploying a WMN in small to medium cities based on the cooperation of its inhabitants and on off-the-shelf wireless equipment.
