'Field work' : drawing lessons from urban agriculture to facilitate transitions towards sustainable cities

    Publicação
    por Simon, Sandrine
Based on a research project focused on urban agriculture initiatives in Lisbon, this article explores the three dimensions (economic, ecological and social) of sustainability, in view of improving our understanding of what a ‘sustainable city’ may be. In particular, it describes how urban agriculture is helping i) to meet one of the most basic human needs for food; ii) to improve both people’s health - by tackling people’s diet – and the ‘environmental health’ of a city – and by introducing more ecologically-friendly agricultural processes that also help fight climate change and water problems; and iii) to tackle social cohesion issues – by facilitating exchanges and learning within communities. Three critical policy areas where ‘back to human scale’ can have a global impact are then investigated, using the lessons drawn from Urban Agriculture (UA): a) Education for sustainability – and how territorial and social learning can also have an impact on global citizenship education; b) Participatory governance – linking citizen science with urban governance, using ICTs; and c) Political ecology – including fighting climate change through new forms of activism such as ‘proximity and disruptive dissent’ and improving people’s awareness on the political dimensions of food production through alternative food networks dealing with food democracy. The article demonstrates the contribution that modest practical actions undertaken by individuals at neighbourhood levels could have at policy levels if advances in ‘participatory urban governance’, put forward by policy-makers and researchers, are to be taken seriously and better connected to the realm of ‘practical (field-) work’

This paper summarizes the results achieved by the 3-year E.U. SURE-Africa project. The project aims at strengthening knowledge and its application in practice, contributing to a sustainable development through the vital area of energy efficiency in buildings and cities, and, ultimately, to reduce poverty. Academic and professional expertise from three E.U. Universities - namely the Higher Technical Institute (IST, Coord, Portugal), the University of Cambridge (UK) and the University of Lund (Sweden) - was organised to set up a data-base of information, in cooperation with Academic Institutions in Portuguese-speaking African countries (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea), with information about tools, case studies and teaching material in the field of sustainable, energy-efficient building and urban design. Seminars, workshops and conferences were carried out, and best-practice Manuals are also being published as a final outcome of the project.

The influence of renewable energy in smart cities : the europen perspetive for new business

Re-imagining Pekan Kuah as the Rainforest Shopping Paradise of Langkawi

    Publicação
    por Ab. Rahman, Rashidah
Outros Autores: Mahdzub, Amira Fadhilah; Yahya, Josmin; Zubir, Syed Sobri
This paper addresses Theme III: Architecture, Spatiality and Perception. Pekan Kuah, a small town on the legendary island of Langkawi is used as the exploratory setting. The rich bio-diversity provides major tourists’ attractions on Langkawi. Shopping does not. Its designation as a Duty-Free island status in 1987 had limited effect. The issue is how to turn Pekan Kuah into an inviting shopping environment for local and international visitors. This paper outlines the relationship between structures and objects that defines ‘shoppingscapes’ within a newly rejuvenated urban-shopping environment of this island town. The more urban part of the island need not be an isolated man-made district. The rich layering of tropical rainforest provides the inspiration. New structures not only provide a new kind of public spaces in Langkawi but also change the perception of public spaces there as a whole - thus transforming Pekan Kuah as the Rainforest Shopping Paradise of Langkawi.

Differentiated inhabitation : residents’ experience of Álvaro Siza’s Bouça housing estate

    Publicação
    por Ascensão,António Eduardo Alves Martins
    Outros Autores: Machado,Marta; Catrica,Paulo; Costa,Ana Catarina
This paper explores the different ways residents of famous buildings experience the architecture they live in. We aim at an architectural photography that seeks to portray architecture not as a visual phenomenon but rather a lived one. We have photographed residents of the Bouça housing estate in Porto, Portugal, designed in the 1970s by Pritzker Prize winning Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza to house the urban poor after the 1974 revolution. The estate has since become an architectural icon and is currently undergoing gentrification by architects, designers and artists who are drawn to the appeal of ‘auteur architecture’. The differences in inhabitation between the original residents and the recent ones pertain to a complex yet dualistic stance between two distinct social classes on what architecture is and what it means, one that also raises the issue of housing for the urban poor becoming fashionable. We read such tensions while tracing back to Siza’s early belief in a classless society, which later evolved into the belief in an ‘interclassist city’.
