Outros Autores: Oliveira, Rui Aragão Gomes; Leal, Isabel Pereira; Vieira, Cristina
Objective: To explore adults’ experiences of lower limb amputation, focusing on the changes in self-identity related to the impairment. Design: A cross-sectional and qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed, coded and analysed by two independent researchers. Setting: A rehabilitation medicine service from a general public hospital. Participants: A convenience sample of 42 patients with lower limb amputation performed after the age of 18 and followed up in the physical medicine and rehabilitation department of a general hospital. Main outcome measures: A semi-structured interview, addressing three core areas: the emotional impact of amputation; the adjustment process; and the relation with the external resources. Results: Eight themes emerged from interviews: reactions and feelings about becoming amputee; changes in own life; problems in well-being; relation with the prosthesis; self-perceptions; aims related to the rehabilitation and future plans; relation with the rehabilitation; and perceived social support. These results supported a theoretical model for the self-identity changes related to limb loss. Conclusions: The self-identity changes after a lower limb amputation appear beyond the patient’s body image and functioning, affecting the patient’s awareness of the impairment, biographical self and any future projections.

Self-Awareness, verbalization and new meanings as the heart and soul of significant events in Existential Psychotherapy

    Publicação
    por Sousa, Daniel
Outros Autores: Pestana, Ana Marta Quina; Tavares, António Tiago Pereira
This study aimed to qualitatively analyze the significant events that occur during existential psychotherapy sessions from the perspective of the patient. Ten patients completed the HAT—helpful aspects of therapy—shortly after existential psychotherapy sessions during existential psychotherapy treatment, which lasted 1 year and consisted of 48 sessions. The data were analyzed using grounded theory. The results emphasized the following categories: the promotion of self-awareness, the possibility of verbalizing experiences, and the deepening of meanings. In addition to emphasizing human relationships, the patients also emphasized a preference for interventions by existential therapists that were more directive, such as providing feedback, challenging personal beliefs, and asking questions. The results emphasize the integrated use of the two phenomenological methods, specifically, the static and the genetic methods.

The work falls on them, gathering firewood for the fire, looking for “bread-for the children”, basket in hand, returning from the field. From informal to formal jobs, Cape Verdean women survived between the Portuguese colonizer and the Cape Verdean man. Knowing how Cape Verdean nurses perceive Cape Verdean Women was the motto for this work, which seeks to not only access nurses' perspective on the characteristics of Cape Verdean women, as well as the health needs of these women. Bardin's qualitative content analysis methodology was used. We conclude that Cape Verdean women, even today, are characterized as working women, focused on the domestic space, often victims of gender violence, and with low literacy. In view of the health needs, it is identified that nurses consider it necessary for these women to have free consultations and better care in the field of maternal and obstetric health.

Shadows and lights on fact-checking research: trends, methodologies, and empirical approaches

    Publicação

Outros Autores: Rivas-de-Roca, Rubén; Ribeiro, Fábio Fonseca; Battista, Daniele
Fact-checking is not new in journalism, nor is disinformation a novel threat to newsrooms. Yet, the digital information overload poses new challenges to verification practices. In this context, fact-check platforms have gained relevance, including geographical contexts marked by polarization such as Southern Europe. This article presents a systematic review of 108 peer-reviewed articles on fact-checking, published between 2020 and 2023 in Southern Europe and indexed in Scopus. Specifically, we analyze trends, practices, methodologies, topics covered and main empirical findings. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Most publications originate from universities in Spain (74%), where research emphasizes journalistic practices. Italian studies often focus on the intersection of fact-checking and artificial intelligence, while Portuguese contributions lack thematic specificity. Our findings also suggest statistically significant variations from country to country, meanwhile, research objectives typically revolve around fact-checking guidelines and disinformation narratives, though the effectiveness of fact-checking remains underexplored, partly due to methodological limitations. Quantitative methods, especially content analysis, dominate the corpus, frequently using fact-checking content as data sources. The study highlights the need to expand fact-checking research in Southern Europe, suggesting more diverse methodological approaches and broader thematic agendas. Additionally, qualitative insights are especially needed to deepen understanding in this field.

Depression and experience of vision loss in group of adults in rehabilitation setting: Mixed-methods pilot study

    Publicação
por Senra, Hugo Renato Carreira Gomes
Outros Autores: Vieira, Cristina; Nicholls, Elizabeth G.; Leal, Isabel Pereira
There is a paucity of literature regarding the relationship between the experience of vision loss and depression. Therefore, the current pilot study aimed to explore whether significant differences existed in levels of depression between adults with different vision loss experiences. A group of adults aged between 20 and 65 yr old with irreversible vision loss in a rehabilitation setting was interviewed. Semistructured interviews were conducted in order to explore patients’ experience of vision loss. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to assess depressive levels; 39.5% (n = 15) of patients met CES-D criteria for depression. In addition, higher levels of depression (p < 0.05) were identified in patients whose interviews revealed greater selfawareness of impairment, inadequate social support, and longer rehabilitation stay. Current findings draw attention to variables such as self-awareness of impairment and perceived social support and suggest that depression following vision loss may be related to patients’ emotional experiences of impairment and adjustment processes.

Exploring Portuguese physicians' perceptions of climate change impacts on health: A qualitative study

    Publicação
    por Ponte, Nidia
Outros Autores: Alves, Fátima; Vidal, Diogo Guedes
Introduction: Health professionals, as primary responders to climate change health impacts, must be wellinformed to effectively communicate adaptation risks and benefits to influence both patients and organizations. This study was undertaken in order to survey how physicians in Portugal understand, explain, and experience the impacts of climate change on health in their clinical practice. Understanding physicians’ knowledge level on this subject also can help determine whether training is needed, and through what educational mechanisms. Material and methods: Using a semi-structured interview script, this study applied a qualitative methodology with interviews of 13 physicians from various medical specialties in Portugal, aged 28 to 73. Results: All participants recognized that human action is the main contributor to climate change, indicating that fossil fuels and overproduction are the main factors responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. They also agreed that climate change affects human health. However, they reported that they find connecting diseases to climate change challenging in their clinical practice, and expressed the need for training on the effects of climate change on health. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that physicians recognized the importance of understanding and communicating the connection between climate change and health in their daily practice, and that failure to recognize these impacts may affect appropriate diagnosis and preparedness for extreme climate events. These results highlight the urgency of addressing the health impacts of climate change and underscore the role of education and awareness.
