Analisar Tendências e Compreender a Moda

    Publicação
    por Alves, Joana Gonçalves
    Origem: uBibliorum

    O Rosa, o Punk e a Reutilização

    Publicação
por Santos, Ana Catarina da Silva dos
    Origem: uBibliorum

Punk as an Alternative Public Space: A Theoretical Analysis

    Publicação
    por Choi Loureiro, Diana
Based on the theories of Habermas, Fraser, Taylor, Arendt, Brighenti, and Honneth, this study examines the dynamics of plurality, communication, and resistance in the context of alternative public spaces. The analysis traces the evolution of the public space concept, from the Habermasian model to the pluralization of alternative public spheres, to explore how this concept manifests in punk as a form of cultural and political contestation. The punk movement is analyzed as an alternative public space that challenges hegemonic norms and provides a platform for the visibility and recognition of marginalized identities. By highlighting its discursive and aesthetic practices, the study reflects on the role of punk as a space where resistances to power structures are articulated and new forms of social participation are promoted.

    Origem: Oasisbr
This thesis aims to discuss the Hardcore, here understood as an offshoot of the punk movement in the early 1980. The punk movement has its origins recognized in the United States and England, headed by small portions of youth in these countries and, in a sense, represents an important manifestation of counter-cultural nature. Not limited to their places of origin, we intend to trace how this movement arrives in Brazil, and especially as it is constituted in the city of Goiânia, which was chosen as the main cutting of this work. In this city, the first manifestations linked to Hardcore and Punk only happened in the late 1980s, when a number of situations that had great importance for this ideological and musical movement serve as expression of the revolt of certain local youth installment. In the subsequent decade, we will see a significant expansion of the movement in the city, as we have a great number of individuals participating in cultural activities and artistic productions linked to it. Seeking recognize the consolidation of this scene in Goiânia, this text will examine the materials produced during the 2000s, understood here as registering a memory of events that occurred in the previous two decades.

THE AESTHETICIZATION OF THE PUNK MOVEMENT IN/BY THE CULTURAL INDUSTRY: FROM POLITICAL EXHAUSTION TO THE SEARCH FOR NOSTALGIA

    Publicação
por Santos Neto, Valdemir Soares dos
Outros Autores: Bressan Júnior, Mario Abel
    Origem: Oasisbr
This article launches a reflection on the genesis of the punk movement in order to observe the failure of the established political meaning to the detriment of the cultural aestheticization imposed by the capitalist system. The punk movement emerged in the mid70s, in different parts of the world, as a political manifesto, counterculture, in response to the homogenization of the capitalist system in society. Therefore, we reflect in this study how the media industries appropriate aesthetics from the punk scene to re-update our imaginaries and our collective memories. To weave these reflections, authors from the most diverse fields of knowledge are mobilizers in order to understand the goals that culminated in the movement, in addition to a critical discussion around the relationship between the cultural industry and nostalgia. It is believed that dissatisfaction with the future, as it emerged in modernity, materializes in postmodernity in the search for a nostalgic sense of the aesthetic narratives adopted by the punk movement.

This project studies the relationship between music and graphic design, particularly album covers and their importance for popular culture. It focuses on album covers from the rock and punk movements since those particular movements have originated some of the most famous and influential album covers of all time, like The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon or The Clash’s London Calling. This research aims to document the impact of the invention of the “artistic” album cover, by Columbia Records employee Alex Steinweiss in the 1930s, on graphic design and the music industry. It is divided in two main parts: one that studies in depth a list of album covers of those two movements, from 1967 until 1999 and another that addresses the changes that occured in the music industry and graphic design after the introduction of the digital formats like the CD, the MP3 and streaming services. This last part mentions album covers from 2000 onwards that managed to be relevant despite the change in the role of the album cover in the 21st century. It also studies the role of the vinyl record in album cover design both in its golden period (mid-20th century to the late 1980s) and in its revival from the mid-2000s. This research accompanies a website that documents the covers studied, their graphic design, their importante for the music industry and for the respective movements to which they belong. The website functions as an ever-changing open platform, to which new data that reflects and documents the emerging trends in music-related graphic design may be added at any time. This project, in both its theoretical and practical components, contributes to new knowledge by analysing and reflecting on the role and the profession of the graphic designer in the music industry. Simultaneously, it ponders on the importance of music-related graphic design in popular culture and in the history of graphic design

The Social Place of the Portuguese Punk Scene: an Itinerary of the Social Profiles of its Protagonists

    Publicação
    por Abreu, Paula
Outros Autores: Silva, Augusto Santos; Guerra, Paula; Oliveira, Ana; Moreira, Tânia
This article will present a characterisation of the Portuguese punk scene between 1977 and 2014, while considering the social profiles of its protagonists. It is based on the sociological principle that the social positioning of social actors influences what they do, say, and feel. Their social profiling will help clarify their role in the musical scene. This approach has been deemed fundamental in interpreting post-war youth cultures and the way in which they re-equated pop culture. In this article, we have two particular aims: first, establishing a portrait of the leading characters in the Portuguese punk scene through the social profiling of 214 individuals interviewed between May 2012 and October 2014; second, allowing for comparisons with other musical scenes in Portugal and/or with punk scenes in other countries. Here, we must obviously consider the social condition of these protagonists, including not only their class origin and present affiliation but also other relevant characteristics, such as gender and age. Thus, this article will explore the following topics: roles and functions within the punk scene, gender relations, age groups and the process of ageing, territorial placement—both in terms of origin and of residence, educational capital, and socio-occupational group.

Through the rabbit hole : o Design como expressão contracultural - uma análise empírica

    Publicação
por Duque, Juliana Raquel do Espírito Santo Fonseca
This investigation looks at the evolution of the graphic language of the 1960s Counterculture to assess its impact and influence on the design practice of subsequente moments. To this end, we carried out a comparative analysis of the countercultural design of the 1960s with the graphic languages of Punk (1970-80s) and Rave (1980-90s). We collected and examined about two thousand graphic materials of North American and British origin, covering the three countercultural phenomena. As a main result, it appears that the countercultural graphic language of the 1960s left us something more than a simple 'nostalgic legacy', not being confined to its original period of manifestation. The research contradicts the somewhat stereotyped and even reductive view of the 1960s Counterculture as fashion, allowing us to see the tangible effect of its graphic materials on Punk and Rave design. The intersection of the three countercultural waves reveals, in addition to contesting the respective regimes, a challenge to the practice of mainstream design. All graphic languages revealed a DIY system, based on similar work processes and methodologies and the sharing of visual features such as the appropriation of references, the openness to strident colors, or the use of transcultural symbols. The unprecedented extent of the collection and analysis of graphic materials, the gathering of original testimonies by experts in Counterculture, and the set of results obtained are unique contributions of this study to the research in countercultural graphic design.
