Desenraizar o ordenamento: Território, Planeamento e Urbanismo na pós-colonialidade portuguesa
Publicaçãopor Cardoso, RicardoCenter for some and periphery of many others, Portugal occupies a peculiar place in the production ecologies of contemporary urban knowledge. If, on the one hand, the notion of planning that has been generated here represents the norm from which order is defined in various parts of the world, on the other hand, urban theory reaches us from other places. None of this is surprising. In fact, there are few cases in which the notion of planning is absolutely interior to the empirical reality in which it is applied. However, the trajectories travelled by theory are far from being symmetrical. Concepts are not uniformly distributed and the hierarchical nature of North-South relations plays here a fundamental role. This article tests a postcolonial approach to issues of territory, planning and urbanism in Portugal. Starting from the importance of considering how theory travels, what is at issue here is a "double movement of dislocation and location" similar to that proposed by Manuela Ribeiro Sanches in Deslocalizar a Europa (2005). There is, however, a long way to go and before we can dislocate, we must uproot. This article intends to establish starting points for reinterpreting the forms of urban knowledge that is produced here, probing its epistemological certainties and calling into question its geographical and disciplinary horizons. The objective is, in other words, to lay foundations for many theoretical journeys "through the interstices of cultures, nations and disciplines" (Ribeiro Sanches 2005: 8). In doing so, three short itineraries are pursued: the first course will follow postcolonial studies, the second route will trace some of the Portuguese inflections to postcolonial thought, and the third trajectory will track the impact of postcolonialism in the urban and planning disciplines at the international level. These three itineraries will then lead to an analysis of knowledge about territory, planning and urbanism in the Portuguese context. By examining the theoretical proposals of João Ferrão and Álvaro Domingues, two authors who recurrently question the dominant core of planning in Portugal, this article intends to illustrate how rooted the colonial imagination is in our territory, planning and urbanism. Here too there is much to decolonize. Here too we must encourage new ways of interpreting, understanding, and teaching the past and the present. -

Memories of faraway visitors to Southeast Asia: the ‘Portuguese fort’ in Amurang
Publicaçãopor Schouten, Maria Johanna ChristinaOrigem: uBibliorumThis article examines today’s perception among Indonesians of the Portuguese presence in Eastern Indonesia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Despite evidence of the often violent pursuit of supremacy and material benefit by European navigators, the local population has different understandings of the past. An assessment of these from an anthropological perspective is guided by twin concepts such as emics and etics, and memory and history. Our case study combines documentary research and fieldwork, focusing on a colonial fort in Amurang, on the island of Sulawesi. The present-day accounts of the local population and of some official organizations attribute a Portuguese origin to this fort, and narratives about the Portuguese abound in folk memory, often contradicting the findings of scientific research. Significant is the positive image of the Portuguese prevalent among the population. The article includes historical data on the Portuguese and Spanish presence in Indonesia and ethnographic data of Amurang, as well as architectural and archaeological details of the fort. -

Constructing a national identity in Timor-Leste: Reflections
Publicaçãopor Schouten, Maria Johanna ChristinaOrigem: uBibliorumIn May 2002, when its independence was formally established, Timor-Leste became the latest of the former Portuguese colonies that had to come to terms with its colonial heritage. But this was not its only challenge, as this territory had been occupied by its neighbour Indonesia in the period 1975-1999, entailing misery for the population and an ‘Indonesiazation’ of their cultural expressions and institutions. The new state of Timor-Leste needed to conquer respect on the world stage – on the map it is a dwarf between the giants of Indonesia and Australia – and also legitimacy among its citizens, where problems triggered in particular by the Indonesian occupation still lingered. Therefore, the closely-connected processes of state-building, nation-building and identity-building have been going on until now. The state and several linked organizations such as the educational institutions are highly involved in the promotion of the ‘feeling of belonging’ to Timor-Leste among the citizens. Factors which complicate this identity-construction include internal rivalries, the cultural influence of Indonesia, and the great heterogeneity of the population, which counts about twenty ethnolinguistic groups. In the paper several dimensions and symbolic objects and events that are created and activated for the construction of a national identity are examined. These are the flag and anthem, language, religion, monuments, the cult of national heroes, and national celebrations. In most of these dimensions elements of perceived national culture as well as of Portuguese legacy are interwoven. The paper is based on documental research and interviews and observations in Timor-Leste during November 2016. PowerPoint, not the written texto, available. -

Publicaçãopor Brito, Gustavo Santana MirandaOrigem: OasisbrThe present dissertation will analyze the relations established between the Body, the Land and the Memory in three novels of the Zimbabwean poet and novelist Chenjerai Hove: Bones (1988), Shadows (1991) e Ancestors (1996). The study of the novels revealed the deep relation that the natives of Rhodesia, nowadays called Zimbabwe, had with their lands and their ancestors. The objective of this paper is to present the profound changes that happened in the culture of the Shona ethnicity after the arrival of the colonizers and the missionaries in the end of the XIX Century. The perspective adopted to this criticism observes in each of the novels the characters’ native bodies in a intense struggle between two misbalanced forces that used to be the fundaments of the ancient Zimbabwean reality. In one side there is the Land, considered holy because of its mystical aspect. The Land carries the umbilical cords of every newborn and the bones of all deceased, and it is the home of the ancestors, called Pasí. On the other side rest the Ancestors, responsible for the accumulation of knowledge. The Ancestors represent the collective memory of the Shona people; they connect the individuals to nature due to their transcendence. With the Ancestors each Shona can talk to the land and be heard through the religious ears of their ancient forefathers. However, when the colonizers arrived, called those without knees because of their pants, they imposed, with violence, a whole new culture to that ancient model of existence. This work will evaluate the consequences of the imposition of the colonizer’s culture, present in every page of each novel; what caused the loss of local religious traditions, deeply rooted moral behaviors, farming techniques and so many other aspects of the colonized culture. For the Body, the physical violence, the imposition of the English language and the prohibition of the local dialects; for the Land, the new and imported profit-driven farming cultures; for the Memory, the imposition of Christianity. Because of those material and immaterial wounds the new generations are forced to recover their ancestors’ memory by recreating an updated version of their past. Following this track, this study also dedicates its pages to the observation of the subaltern and peripheral position of the black Zimbabwean woman, being sexually and intellectually discriminated by the patrilinear system in a society that must evolve to solve their own cultural problems of discrimination as well as those created by the colonization. -

Obasan, Obāchan: Japanese Canadian History, Memory, and the Noisy Silences of Joy Kogawa and Hiromi Goto

Going for the jugular : strategies of resistance in the fiction of Helena Maria Viramontes

A lesser lyrics: for a Literary Theory of the African Literatures in Portuguese
Publicaçãopor Santos, Lívia NatáliaOrigem: OasisbrThe focusing on issues relating to the paradigms of the Literary Theory in those texts produced within a certain ethical-aesthetical context most often makes it impossible to understand the literary productions from outside the Eurocentric axis. As a disciplinary field, and due to the very building of its aesthetic criteria, Literary Theory tends to let aside the most recent literary production, mainly that from the emerging peripheries. By analyzing some poems by Ana Paula Tavares, a poet from Angola, the present essay will discuss the limits of the Literary Theory in face of the postcolonial literary production.
