    Publication
    by Pacheco, Pilar de Araújo
    Origin: Oasisbr
Biostimulants are substances capable of modulating diverse events in the physiology of plants, as well as fungicides and their phytotoxic effect on plant metabolism, showing promising results regarding productivity. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of biostimulants associated with fungicides and phyto protectors on soybean agronomic performance. Consisting of three trials, all with eight treatments and four replicates each being the randomized block design. These three trials received the same treatment arrangement: the control received no treatment; treatment 1 (T1) consisted only of biostimulant + fungicide-based seed treatment in stages V4 and R0; Treatment 2 consisted of (T1) + biostimulant and foliar fertilizer in V4; the treatment 3 consisted of (T2) + leaf protector in V4, treatment 4 (T4) consisted of T3 + biostimulant and foliar fertilizer in stage R0; in the treatment 5 the same arrangement of the T4 was used and leaf protector in R0 was added; in treatment 6 the arrangement of T5 + K-based leaf fertilizer in the R0 stage was repeated; and in the treatment 7: the T6 + K-Base Foliar Fertilizer was used in the R3 stage. The first experiment evaluated the application of phytopathogenic amino acids from algae extracts in the soybean crop where it was concluded that applications in the R0 and R3 stages did not show a significant difference, whereas the applications in the V4 stage promoted an increase in the mass characteristics of thousand grains, number of internodes, number of grains per pod and number of grains per plant, and productivity. The second assay evaluated the response of soybeans cultivated under the application of biostimulants from algae extracts, where positive responses were obtained only for the mass variable of one thousand grains under applications of biostimulants in V4. The objective of the third experiment was to evaluate the response of soybean cultivated under application of NAA, macro and chelated microelements where it was verified that conjugated applications in R0 promoted a higher plant height, yield and grain weight.

As cvs.

    Publication
    by Soares, Marcelo de Souza
    Origin: Oasisbr

(Myrtaceae)

    Publication
by Silva, Paulo Roberto Diniz da
    Origin: Oasisbr

Controlling Light to Optimize Growth and Added Value of the Green Macroalga Codium tomentosum

    Publication

Other Authors: Moreira, Anthony; Cruz, Sónia; Calado, Ricardo; Cartaxana, Paulo
Codium tomentosum is a recently domesticated green macroalga, being currently cultured as an extractive species in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). Optimization of light requirements in outdoor systems must be achieved to increase the market value of cultivated algal biomass. The present study addresses the seasonal effects of light intensity and wavelength on productivity, pigment composition and epiphyte overgrowth in C. tomentosum cultured in a land-based IMTA system. Exposure to high light (non-filtered sun light) lead to higher net productivities in spring. However, non-filtered sun light caused significantly reduced productivities during summer when compared to filtered sun light (~ 4x lower irradiance levels). Furthermore, lower photosynthetic capacity (Fv/Fm) was observed in macroalgae cultured under high light during summer, indicating photoinhibition. Treatments with filtered sun light (low and red light) showed intermediate and more stable productivities. Epiphyte biomass was higher under high light and the lowest epiphyte overgrowth was recorded under red light. Concentrations of light-harvesting pigments were lower in summer than in spring, indicating a seasonal photoacclimation of macroalgae. An opposite seasonal trend was observed for accessory xanthophylls, as the main role of these pigments is photoprotection. Higher all-trans-neoxanthin and violaxanthin concentrations were found in high light than in low or red light treatments, confirming the important role of these biomolecules in the photoprotection of C. tomentosum. This study underlines the importance of controlling light to optimize algal growth outdoors and enhance the production of high-value compounds (i.e., pigments). Additionally, this practice can also reduce epiphyte overgrowth, thus enhancing the valorization of macroalgal biomass derived from C. tomentosum aquaculture

Photophysiology of potential chloroplast macroalgal donors to the sea slug Elysia viridis and its kleptoplasts

    Publication
    by Fernandes, Ana Margarida Marques
Some sea slugs from the group Sacoglossa have a particular ability known as kleptoplasty i.e., the capacity to “steal” and use chloroplasts (herein kleptoplasts) from the algae they eat. Kleptoplasts can remain functional for variable time span however, the time of the retain chloroplast can vary depending on the type of macroalgae they feed on. Moreover, the physiological aspects of the algae species have an impact on chloroplast maintenance. In this work five macroalgae species were studied concerning their different photosynthesis and photoprotection characteristics. Additionally, the physiology of Elysia viridis feeding on two different marcoalgae, Codium tomentosum and Bryopsis sp. was investigated. The results showed that sea slug diet had a great impact on growth rate and chloroplast maintenance. Also, Bryopsis sp. appeared to be a more favourable alternative food source to C. tomentosum, presenting better growth rates and photosynthetic activity during both feeding and starvation periods. Furthermore, the presence of photoprotective mechanisms was confirmed in three of the five species (Acetabularia acetabulum, Cladophora sp. and Vaucheria litorea) studied and it was showed the absence of a photoprotective mechanism in the Bryopsidales species C. tomentosum and Bryopsis sp..

Zostera noltei Hornemann sexual reproduction in Ria de Aveiro: insights for seagrass seed-based restoration

    Publication
by Silva, João José Ferreira de Oliveira e
Seagrass beds are declining worldwide, leading to a loss in associated ecosystem services. This was observed decades ago in the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Center of Portugal), where many drivers led to hydrodynamic changes and more recently introduction of invasive alien species, among others, led to seagrass abundance and richness reduction. In the last decade, some recovery was recorded, but still, the dominant seagrass species is the intertidal Zostera noltei Hornemann (dwarf eelgrass). Since 2018, some actions have been put forward to restore degraded meadows, focusing on vegetative transplants. Seed-based restoration techniques have gained attention in the last years, allowing for larger-scale habitat recovery, increasing local genetic and genotypic heterogeneity, and resilience to present and future disturbances. Before seed-based restoration can be employed, several site-specific biotic and abiotic conditions need to be assessed and optimized, including optimum sites and seasons to collect Z. noltei spathes, and conditions to store and germinate seeds. On the other hand, seagrass photosynthesis has been extensively studied in green vegetative organs, but scarcely evaluated for seeds, and, to our knowledge, no research has been done to evaluate spathes photosynthesis. Therefore, the present study implemented at Ria de Aveiro as a case study, aimed at 1) surveying spatial and temporal changes in Z. noltei reproductive effort, 2) assessing optimum seed storage and germination abiotic conditions, and 3) evaluating Z. noltei spathe and seed photosynthesis through chlorophyll a fluorescence. Spatio-temporal changes in the Z. noltei were evaluated through monthly monitoring during the reproductive season (in 2022 and 2023) by sampling biomass and sediment at 3 distant sites at Ria de Aveiro. The best abiotic conditions, such as temperature, salinity, and CuSO4 seed disinfection effect, for seed storage were assessed through laboratory experiments, and salinity and sediment granulometry optimum conditions for seed germination were also tested. Zostera noltei sexual investment varied spatially and temporally, with greater spathe density recorded in Mira and Ílhavo channels, especially from June to August. Positive correlations between sexual effort and sediment characteristics, mainly fine sediments, and organic matter contents, were observed. Seagrass above- and belowground biomass, Z. noltei detritus, and vegetative shoot densities showed temporal and/or spatial differences, with overall higher biomass in summer and at S. Jacinto. Seed loss and germination were lower at 4 °C combined with 30 salinity, CuSO4 did not prevent fungi or oomycetes infection, with many seeds developing visible biofilms. No seedlings germinated at high salinity (30), and the very low seedling establishment prevented relevant conclusions on seed germination abiotic preferences. Spadices are equally efficient in using light for photosynthesis compared to vegetative shoots and spathal blades, but some spadix stages show greater photosynthetic capacity (rETRm), light saturation (Ek), and excess energy dissipation as heat (Y(NPQm)) than the previous organs. Seed’s photosynthetic capacity is rather low compared to published data, and inconclusive. This work contributes to initiating seed-based restoration of Z. noltei beds in Ria de Aveiro, providing insights into the best sites and optimum season to collect spathes, relevant to establishing a laboratory seed bank, and into favorable conditions to store seeds. It also shows for the first time that seagrass spathes and inflorescences are photosynthetic, performing equally or even better than vegetative shoots, potentially supporting (at least partially) flower and seed development. The works done in this dissertation provide important insights to initiate seed-based restoration in the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon.

Effects of nanostructure antifouling biocides towards a coral species in the context of global changes

    Publication

Biofouling prevention is one of the biggest challenges faced by the maritime industry, but antifouling agents commonly impact marine ecosystems. Advances in antifouling technology include the use of nanomaterials. Herein we test an antifouling nano-additive based on the encapsulation of the biocide 4,5-dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (DCOIT) in engineered silica nanocontainers (SiNC). The work aims to assess the biochemical and physiological effects on the symbiotic coral Sarcophyton cf. glaucum caused by (1) thermal stress and (2) DCOIT exposure (free or nanoencapsulated forms), in a climate change scenario. Accordingly, the following hypotheses were addressed: (H1) ocean warming can cause toxicity on S. cf. glaucum; (H2) the nanoencapsulation process decreases DCOIT toxicity towards this species; (H3) the biocide toxicity, free or encapsulated forms, can be affected by ocean warming. Coral fragments were exposed for seven days to DCOIT in both free and encapsulated forms, SiNC and negative controls, under two water temperature regimes (26 °C and 30.5 °C). Coral polyp behavior and photosynthetic efficiency were determined in the holobiont, while biochemical markers were assessed individually in the endosymbiont and coral host. Results showed transient coral polyp retraction and diminished photosynthetic efficiency in the presence of heat stress or free DCOIT, with effects being magnified in the presence of both stressors. The activity of catalase and glutathione-S-transferase were modulated by temperature in each partner of the symbiosis. The shifts in enzymatic activity were more pronounced in the presence of free DCOIT, but to a lower extent for encapsulated DCOIT. Increased levels of oxidative damage were detected under heat conditions. The findings highlight the physiological constrains elicited by the increase of seawater temperature to symbiotic corals and demonstrate that DCOIT toxicity can be minimized through encapsulation in SiNC. The presence of both stressors magnifies toxicity and confirm that ocean warming enhances the vulnerability of tropical photosynthetic corals to local stressors.
