In this study, epoxy nanocomposites containing different fractions of n-phenylaminopropyl (POSS) were prepared. The nanocomposites were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gel content, dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The parameters for Avrami's equation were calculated from the degradation curves. The dispersions used to form the nanocomposites were effective above 5 wt % of POSS, and the gel content increased with the addition of POSS. The DMA analysis exhibited an increase in the storage modulus (E') and a shifting of Tg to higher temperatures upon POSS incorporation. The weight loss indicated that the POSS promoted an increase in thermal stability of the epoxy resin. The Avrami parameters demonstrated that the addition of POSS decreased the Avrami constant (k'), increased the half-life (t1/2) of degradation and promoted changes in the Avrami exponent (n). These results suggest that the increase in the glass transition temperature and thermal stability depend on the reactive groups in the POSS nanoparticles.

The epoxy resin is one of the matrices most employed in obtaining composites and coatings. Its properties have been modified using materials such as clays and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes - POSS. The use of POSS in the preparation of thermosetting nanocomposites has been studied in obtaining hybrid materials with higher mechanic and surface properties. The functionality of POSS cage is important, since a thermosetting is formed by a cross-linked structure that can interact at any direction, forming bonds or acting in the interface of the cages inserted. This works aims to evaluate the influence of three POSS (Glycidylisobutyl-POSS, Triglycidylisobutyl-POSS and Glycidyl-POSS) added in epoxy resin, in the mechanic and electrochemical behaviors, when applied on low alloy steel. It was observed an increase in roughness and hydrophobicity. The sample containing Glycidylisobutyl-POSS presented the best results of corrosion resistance. Glycidyl-POSS showed an inefficient dispersion, forming agglomerates, leading to a low electrochemical behavior.

In this study, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) were synthesized using the one-shot process in solution. To obtain the samples n-phenylaminopropyl polyhedric oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was added as a chain modifier during the synthesis in four different amounts. The samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and capillary rheometry. FTIR confirm the TPU attainment due the absence of the band at ~2253 cm-1 suggesting a complete conversion of the isocyanate terminations. The TGA showed that incorporation of POSS decreased the rate of mass loss of TPU under isothermal conditions. The flexible phase showed an enhanced stability to temperature, probably due to increased phase separation between the rigid and flexible domains. The DSC showed that incorporation of 0.4 wt. (%) of POSS increased the glass transition temperature of the flexible phase. Moreover, addition of POSS modified the melting behaviour, providing samples with a higher melting enthalpy compared to neat TPU as a consequence of the formation of larger crystals. The capillary rheometry analysis revels that the POSS addition showed a clear tendency toward higher intrinsic viscosities as the amount of POSS was increased.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of methacrylate polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS-8) on various material properties and mineral precipitation potential of a resin infiltrant. Methods: A TEGDMA-based resin infiltrant was mixed with 0.5, 1, 3, 5 or 10 wt% POSS-8 or left unchanged (control). Degree of conversion (DC), water sorption (WS), viscosity, elastic modulus (E-modulus), flexural strength (FS), Knoop microhardness (KHN) and softening ratio (SR) were assessed. Growth of calcium phosphate (Ca/P) precipitates infiltrant-treated bovine enamel and dentin specimens immersed in artificial saliva or artificial dentinal fluid, respectively, for 28 days was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. For viscosity assessment, pure TEGDMA filled with 0–10 wt% POSS-8 was used. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests (p < 0.05). Results: POSS-8 did not change the flexural strength, water sorption and softening ratio. The apparent degree of conversion was increased at lower concentrations only while E-modulus remained constant in almost all groups. The particles led to a slight decrease of KHN at concentrations below 3%. The effect on viscosity is comparable to the reinforcement effect. Ca/P precipitates formed on dentin specimens treated with POSS-8-filled infiltrant after 4 weeks of immersion, but were not detected on the control infiltrant. The mineral precipitation on enamel was not improved by POSS-8. Significance: POSS-8 particles did not worsen the material properties of the resin infiltrant, while the Ca/P precipitation on dentin was stimulated.
