    Publication
by Souza, Keila Letícia Baptista de
    Origin: Oasisbr

Other Authors: Augusto, B.; Ascenso, A.; Borrego, C.; Miranda, A.I.
The effect of different “green” measures, such as the increase of urban green areas, the application of green roofs and the increase of surfaces albedo on urban air quality were evaluated with the WRF-CHIMERE modelling system. In order to account for the heterogeneity of urban areas, a single layer urban canopy model was coupled to the WRF model. The case study consists of a heat wave occurring in the Porto (Portugal) urban area in a future climate scenario, considering the Representative Concentration Pathway RCP8.5. The influence of the selected measures on PM10, NO2 and O3 concentrations was quantified and compared with a control run (without measures) simulation scenario. The results revealed that all the measures are able to mitigate the effects of heat waves by reducing the air temperature between −0.5 °C and −1 °C (maximum differences for the mean of the episode). Positive and negative effects were found in terms of air quality. The implementation of green roofs and the increase of surfaces albedo promoted an overall increase of PM10 (between +0.6% and +1.5%) and NO2 (between +0.8% and 3.5%) concentrations, which are closely related to a decrease of vertical mixing in the urban boundary layer. The increase of green urban areas promoted an overall decrease (on average) of both PM10 and NO2, by around −1% and −3%, respectively. The O3 levels increased with the increase of urban green areas, mostly located over the Porto urban area. Slight differences were promoted by the implementation of green roofs. For the increase of surfaces albedo, both increases and decreases of O3 concentrations were observed. The obtained results contribute to the knowledge of the chemical composition of the urban atmosphere and can be of great importance for stakeholders and decision-makers to deal with climate change impacts.

Prediction of the layer longitudinal compression strength

    Publication
    by Morais, A. Balacó de
This paper presents a new approach to the prediction of the layer longitudinal compression strength of continuous fibre polymer matrix composites. It is known that failure is caused by fibre microbuckling and that the initial fibre waviness and the matrix non-linear behaviour play a major role. A previous model compared very well with experimental results, but required a relatively complex numerical solution procedure. In the present model, the compression strength is obtained by solving a fourth-order polynomial equation. Although based on several simplifying assumptions, the model is in good agreement with the numerical model predictions and with experimental data. Further model simplifications lead to a closed-form expression that seems to be valid for carbon and boron fibre composites.

A Model to predict the non-linear shear and flexural behaviour of RC elements subjected to cyclic loading

    Publication
    by Rodrigues, H.
Other Authors: Costa, A.; Varum, H.
The development and implementation of an integrated numerical model to predict the nonlinear response of RC structural elements, including nonlinear flexural and shear behaviour, is proposed and discussed. The presence of RC elements with dominant behaviour in shear is quite common in a significant number of existing and new buildings. Severe damages and/or collapse of buildings have been observed in recent earthquakes due to disregarding of the shear behaviour of these stocky elements. The main objective of the work proposed is the development of a numerical model able to simulate the cyclic behaviour of RC elements subjected to cyclic loads, as the induced by earthquakes. The proposed model would allow to better estimate the nonlinear response of RC buildings under severe ground motions, combining the nonlinear flexural behaviour with the nonlinear shear behaviour. The proposed model for nonlinear shear behaviour has been implemented in the computer program VisualANL and was calibrated with experimental results on full-scale tests on RC columns.

Wave-current interactions over bottom with appreciable variations in both space and time

    Publication
by Carmo, José Simão Antunes do
In shallow water conditions, current and wave propagation cannot be simulated separately and then superposed linearly. In these conditions, in fact, the fluid dynamics of the wave and current motions and, as a consequence, the responses of the movable bed are significantly different from those expected for a linear superposition of a current with a sinusoidal wave. Thus, wave nonlinearity and the wave-current interaction effects become important factors that need to be considered. A model should be also able to reproduce the fluid dynamics under shallow water conditions over significant slopes and time-bed-level changes. This paper presents a 1DH mathematical formulation of a hydrodynamic model and its numerical solution. The model is able to reproduce all characteristic shallow water phenomena, including: (i) wave-wave and wave-current interaction effects; (ii) important ratios between the current and wave velocities; (iii) significant bed slopes and sudden time-bed-level changes, and (iv) friction stresses at the bottom and at the free surface. Different orders of mathematical approximations and appropriate application examples are also presented

The Effect of Bond-Slip in the Numerical Assessment of RC Frames Under Cyclic Loading

    Publication
    by Lobo, Paulo S.
Other Authors: Almeida, J.; Guerreiro, L.
Bond-slip may have significant influence on the assessment, with numerical models, of reinforced concrete structures subjected to cyclic loadings, whether static or dynamic. Its influence is discussed with the correlation of experimental and analytical results, where two numerical models are considered, including a perfect bond fiber-section finite element formulation and a force-based fiber-section model including bond-slip in the vicinity of the frame joints, both exterior and interior. In this case, the model implemented makes it possible to consider the coupling effect of the response of the beams adjacent to the joint, and the models are constructed from the geometrical and material characteristics of the structure, without any calibration procedures. The experimental results are from a reinforced concrete column and a beam-column subassemblage, both subjected to static cyclic loadings, with predefined displacements sequences for the element-ends, and from a shaking table test of a one bay two-story reinforced concrete frame structure. The comparisons show that the considered bond-slip based model makes it possible to satisfactorily predict the response of reinforced concrete frames under both static and dynamic cyclic loadings. The influence of reinforcement slippage was evaluated by comparison of the previous results with those obtained with the perfect bond-based model. This made it possible to conclude that the accuracy of the model considering bond-slip is significantly superior to that of the perfect bond model. Furthermore, responses obtained with the previous model show the pinching effect, which is characteristic of reinforced concrete structures and significantly changes the hysteretic dissipated energy, not delivered by the latter model. This can also be seen in the effect of bond-slip in the response of the fibers which model the reinforcing rebars.

    Publication
by Lucas, Maria do Carmo Mourato Leitão Vinagre

Analysis of estuarine flood levels based on numerical modelling. The Douro river estuary case study

    Publication

Estuarine hydrodynamics present intermittent and complex circulation patterns. In this context, from the point of view of the coastal management associated with flood risks in riverine areas, numerical models allow predicting scenarios under specific hypotheses. This work simulates flood events occurring in the Douro river estuary recurring to numerical modelling tools. This estuary, located in the northern region of Portugal, periodically suffered severe flooding, with the associated losses and damages for the local protected landscape areas and hydraulic structures. The occurrence of these events justify the importance of a complete characterization of the areas that present risk of inundation and how they can be affected. A 2D-horizontal numerical model implemented with the Delft3D software was developed for this estuarine region including also the adjacent coastal zone. Available in-situ data were used for model calibration and validation processes. The obtained results are consistent with the in-situ measured water levels, allowing to understand the dynamics of the estuary during flood events. The robustness of the implemented numerical model allows to anticipate flood scenarios effects and associated water levels. The simulations results can then be used for sustainable management of this estuarine zone that presents high social, economic and environmental values.

Numerical modelling and strut-and-tie concepts for seismic design and assessment of pre-cast two-column bents

    Publication
    by Carvalho, Lucas
Other Authors: Pimentel, Mário; Delgado, Pedro; Arêde, António; Pouca, Nelson Vila; Pinto, José Rui
Precast structures are more common in zones not affected by earthquakes or affected by low - to moderate-intensity earthquakes; the application of precast structures in zones of higher seismic intensity is unusual due to the seismic performance uncertainty of these structures. Concerning precast bridges, special attention needs to be paid on the column to cap-beam connections, as well as the methods to anchor the column longitudinal bars into the cap beam or foundation. The constructability of these joints often becomes unworkable due to the high reinforcement concentration that current standards require. Moreover, some design rules are rather unclear and the link to the flow of forces in the joint is sometimes lost. In this paper, to ensure a clear understanding of the forces flow, strut-and-tie concepts were applied to design a column-to-cap-beam joint region of a viaduct located in southern Europe. In addition, different ductility classes were considered. Emphasis was given to nonlinear numerical models developed to validate the strut-and-tie models as well as to evaluate the two ductility scenarios performed. As a modeling strategy, a rotating smeared crack approach was considered; also, constitutive models with fracture energy were considered to simulate the concrete mechanical behavior. Numerical results will be further validated through an experimental campaign planned to assess the structural performance of the designed solution.
