Longevity is one of the great achievements of mankind. Aging is a continuous and physiological process, characterized and recognized by the diminished functional capacity of various biological systems. Sarcopenia and decreased muscle strength are characteristic of this process. Evaluation of palmar grip strength (FPP) is an important measure to estimate the impairment of a person's overall muscular strength and has been highlighted in studies of genetic susceptibility underlying aging. In this context, the objective of the present study was to verify the relationship between the unique nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs1800849, rs15763, rs3781907, rs647126, rs1685354 and rs11235972 of the UCP3 gene and the FPP in a group of adult people from the city of Goiânia. The present study was of the cross-sectional type, composed of 159 participants from the population of Goiás, who underwent an evaluation of FPP and the collection of biological samples for genotyping through the qPCR of the polymorphic sites of the UCP3 gene. Of the participants, 69.2% were women. The mean age was 50.4 (± 20.2) years, and that of FPP was 29.5 (± 14.6) kgf. It was observed that 42.8% of the study participants showed a reduction in FPP in relation to age and a negative and statistically significant correlation between FPP and age (r = -0.54; p≤0.0001). The FPP peak in the study participants was below 40 years for both women and men. A significant decrease in FPP was observed at age 50 also for both sexes. SNPs rs647126 and rs1685354 had the highest binding imbalance (D '= 1) with 32% r 2. The three most frequent haplotypes in the study population were h2 (GAGGAA), h13 (GGAAAA) and h16 (AAAGGG), whose frequencies were 26.2%, 22.2% and 12.9%, respectively. To evaluate muscular strength as an important component to understand the sarcopenia and the aging of the human organism. In the present study, the variation of polymorphisms rs1800849, rs15763, rs1685354, rs3781907, rs11235972 and rs647126 of the UCP3 gene was not associated with the reduction of FPP in adults living in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil.

The aim of this study was to review methods and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia available in the literature to estimate the prevalence and concordance between them, in a sample of elderly Goiânia, and propose anthropometry for screening sarcopenia. To review methods we used the recommendations for systematic review and meta-analysis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: The PRISMA Statement. For other purposes, we used a subsample of 132 elderly Senior Project/ Goiânia, selected in proportion to the Sanitation Districts of Goiânia. The data were collected by staff previously trained and standardized. Sarcopenia was analyzed by mass and muscle strength. The mass mucular was estimated by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometry, and muscle strength through hand grip strength (FPP). Analyses were performed in STATA 12.0, comparison of means and proportions, estimation of prevalence and prevalence ratio, Kappa, calculation of sensitivity and specificity analysis and ROC (receiver operator characteristic) curve. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Goiás. In 28 prevalence studies reviewed were found three methods for the diagnosis of sarcopenia: DEXA BIA and anthropometry with significant variations in prevalence as sex and the method adopted. Applying the diagnostic criteria found in the subsample Elderly Project/ Goiânia, the prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 60.6% to 8.3% for the criteria of muscle mass and 54.2% to 48.8% for the strength, increasing in age and is more prevalent in men by criteria of muscle mass and women by criteria muscle strength. There was good agreement between two diagnostic criteria using DEXA, and moderate to weak for others. Anthropometric measurements of the circumference of the calf (CP), midlearm circumference (MAMC) and brachial circumference (CB) have been proposed for screenig sarcopenia and all showed good sensitivity and specificity for the cutoff of DEXA, and the CP had the best performance. We conclude that there are different methods and criteria for diagnosis of sarcopenia and its aplicabillity both in elderly sample of Goiânia, as other results in different prevalence rates by sex and age. The only good agreement between the two methods indicates DEXA both the need for an operational definition and the need for early detection. Anthropometric measurements of CP, CMB and CB can be used for tracking and consequent prevention of adverse events in elderly health resulting from sarcopenia

The study is part of a randomized, parallel clinical trial entitled "Effect of nutritional intervention and olive oil in severely obesity (DieTBra Trial)." The original articles seek to investigate sarcopenia in severe obese adults in terms of prevalence, factors associated with its diagnosis and the effectiveness of extra virgin olive oil and the traditional Brazilian diet as a dietary intervention. A total of 111 severe obese individuals (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 35.0 kg/m²) participated in the clinical trial, with a follow-up of 12 weeks and three intervention groups: Olive oil = extra virgin olive oil (52 mL/day); DieTBra = traditional Brazilian diet; DieTBra + Olive Oil = DieTBra + extra virgin olive oil (52 mL/day). Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (MMEA), measured in the total form (kg), adjusted by squared height (appendicular skeletal muscle mass index [IMMEA]) and by BMI (MMEA/BMI), strength of manual (FPM) and BMI adjusted (FPM/BMI), and walking speed. The prevalence calculation considered the cutoff points proposed in the literature and the calculation of -2 standard deviation (SD) of the mean value of the parameters of muscle mass evaluated in the study population. The ANOVA test was applied to evaluate the difference between the means of the parameters of second to the age group. The prevalence according to cutoff points proposed in the literature varied from 2.88% for IMMEA, 6.73% for total MMEA and 62.50% according to MMEA/BMI. When adopting - 2 SD below the mean of the study population, the prevalence was 2.88% for total MMEA and 3.85% for IMMEA and MMEA/BMI. Although no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) was found between the means of the parameters according to the age group, prevalence values higher than those previously demonstrated in the age group ≥ 40 years were observed. In the second article, the explanatory variables considered were age, lifestyle, health conditions, food consumption and biochemical tests. Those with p value < 0.20 in simple linear regression were included in multiple linear regression. Among the factors inversely associated with IMMEA are serum levels of tetraiodothyronine (T4) and smoking. MMEA/BMI was inversely associated with age, serum T4 levels and presence of diabetes. MMEA also remained inversely associated with serum T4 levels and diabetes. The reduction of FPM and FPM/BMI were associated with advancing age and presence of hypercholesterolemia. Already the low speed of march was associated with the presence of diabetes and hypothyroidism. The primary endpoint considered in the third article was the IMMEA and the secondary ones were: FPM, gait speed, MMEA/IMC, total MMEA, total body fat and percentage. In the endpoints and covariates analyzed, the delta was also calculated, which is the difference between the value of the end of follow-up and the baseline. Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was performed to analyze the effect of covariates delta weight, delta physical activity, delta time of sedentary lifestyle, sex and age, on the outcomes. A significance level of 5% was adopted. After performing the ANCOVA, the covariates of the delta weight adjusted the following outcomes in the DieTBra intervention group: reduction of delta total body fat (p = 0.016), increase in delta walking speed (p = 0.042) and delta FPM (p = 0.044 ). And also for reduction of delta body fat in the DieTBra + Olive oil group (p = 0.004). When adjusted for the delta time of sedentary lifestyle, total body fat presented a significant reduction in the DieTBra + Olive oil group (p = 0.001). The prevalence of sarcopenia differed as different assessments were used for muscle mass, evidencing the need to standardize the criteria and cutoff points used in its classification. The factors associated with the evaluation parameters, evidenced the importance of the creation of clinical measures and public health aimed at the prevention of sarcopenia. The positive effects of DieTBra and DieTBra + Olive oil on the parameters of sarcopenia and adiposity, reveal the importance of the adequate evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of sarcopenia in adults with severe obesity.

This study consists of two scientific papers. The first aimed at investigating the effects of an individualized and supervised exercise program to strengthen pelvic floor muscles (PFM) in the postpartum period of multiparous women, and verify the correlation between two methods used to assess muscle strength. The second paper aimed at verifying the perception that puerperal women have regarding the alterations to their vaginal area and sex life after childbirth and after a PFM exercise program. To achieve these goals, an open clinical trial was performed on the first study, while the second conducted an exploratory and descriptive study. The final sample consisted of 23 puerperal women divided into two groups: intervention group (IG, n=11) and control group (CG, n=12). In IG, the puerperal women participated in an eight-week PFM exercise program, twice a week. In CG, the puerperal women did not receive any recommendations regarding exercises. PFM strength was assessed by digital vaginal palpation using the modified Oxford Scale and perineometer. The statistical analysis of the first article was performed using the following tests: Fisher s Exact Test, Chi-squared Test, Student s t-test, Kolmogorov Smirnov test for the two samples, and Pearson s Correlation Coefficient. Significance was defined as p < 0.05. On the second paper, categories were established and content analysis was performed. The participants mean age in IG was 24 ± 4.56 years, and 25.33 ± 4.03 years in CG (p=0.465). By completing the PFM exercise program, a significant difference was observed between the groups in the two muscle strength assessments (p0.001). The two methods used to assess muscular strength showed significant correlation in both assessments (1st assessment: r = 0.889 with p <0.001; 2nd assessment: r = 0.925 with p <0.001). In terms of the participants perception regarding any vaginal alteration in the late postpartum period, the most frequent reports in both groups were those related to the category perception of low vaginal tonus . Fourteen weeks into the postpartum period, at the end of the exercise program, the participants in IG presented more reports in the category perception of increased vaginal tonus and greater control over the PFM and those in the CG, in the category feels that the vagina is back in the same condition as before pregnancy . Finally, the exercise program resulted in a significant increase in PFM strength in puerperal women and showed positive effects on the perineal area and in the sex life of the participants. Good correlation was observed between digital vaginal palpation and perineometer, which indicates that vaginal palpation can be used in clinical practice, considering it is an inexpensive method that demonstrated significant correlation with an objective method, i.e. perineometer.

Population aging is a reality in Brazil, and this process can lead to increased incidence of chronic-degenerative illnesses as well as frailty syndrome and sarcopenia. Also, a general health condition is established, in which muscle strength is insufficient to carry out routine activities associated with an independent lifestyle. The situation is aggravated by the sedentary lifestyle of the population, as the clinical conditions derived from the lack of physical activity are directly responsible for the mortality of millions of people per year. In Brazil, studies on the health of the population are still very much attached to urban population, and the rural reality remains limited regarding epidemiological research. In the light of the above, this study has the objective of analyzing the body composition, level and volume of physical activity and muscle strength in urban (n=55), rural industrial (n=45) and rural family agriculture (n=44) residents. A cross-sectional study is presented herein. The study volunteers were initially approached at basic health units and therefore the proportion of individuals diagnosed with non-transmissible chronic diseases within the study sample is significant for the three realities studied. Tetrapolar bioimpedance was utilized to assess body composition, handgrip strength and dorsal dynamometer were used to measure muscle strength, and triaxial accelerometer was utilized by the volunteers during seven consecutive days. Descriptive statistical methods were utilized to characterize the population, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk were applied to verify data normality. ANOVA and Kruskall Wallis were applied to repetitive measurements with post hoc Bonferroni and Dunn, respectively, to evaluate the differences between locations (urban, rural agricultural, and rural industrial). Binary logistic regression, with the forward method, was utilized to verify the relationship between the level of physical activity (independent variable) and location (dependent variable), adjusted by age, Body Mass Index (BMI), sex, and muscle strength. Spearman's coefficient was employed to verify the correlation between BMI and the Metabolic Equivalent (MET), daily caloric expenditure (kcal), and the number of steps taken, during one week, according to the location. An acceptable statistical significance level was established as p<0.05. The results of this study indicate that the level of physical activity is significantly lower and differs in volume and intensity patterns for urban subjects (p<0.001) in comparison with rural realities (p<0.001), both for rural agricultural families and those in rural industrial settings. Rural volunteers were more active overall, and presented higher levels of Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) practice. Sedentary lifestyle, identified by the light activity pattern and time spent sitting, was a behavior more associated with urban population (9.05±1.72 sitting hours), resulting in higher accumulation of fat (35.55±7.9% fat) and BMI (27.3±4.7 kg/m2). This scenario represents additional risk for the development of non-transmissible chronic diseases, besides reducing the quality of the skeletal muscle and muscle strength. When related to family agriculture, urban, and rural industrial settings, statistically significant relationships were established for all levels of physical activity: light, p<0.001; moderate, p<0.001; vigorous, p<0.001; very vigorous, p=0.001; MVPA, p<0.001. Regarding the number of steps, it was observed that the fourth day for the rural family group was the most intense, with an average of 12.245.1±3.603.7 steps and significance p<0.001. For the urban volunteers, Sundays presented the lowest average, with 4.672.3±1420.3 steps and significance p<0.001. Overall, the rural family settings registered the highest averages of steps across all weekdays and weekends, while urban settings were responsible for the lowest values recorded during the study. It was concluded that the level of physical activity is significantly lower and differs in volume and intensity patterns for urban subjects in comparison with rural settings (family agriculture and rural industrial), which were more active and presented higher levels of MVPA. Sedentary lifestyle, identified by light activity patterns and time spent sitting, was more associated with urban populations, resulting in higher accumulation of fat and higher BMI, representing additional risks for the development of non-transmissible diseases, besides reducing the quality of the skeletal muscle and muscle strength.

A usCRP aumentou no AI e o sICAM-1 reduziu no RFS.
