    Publication
by Figueiredo, João Manoel Sales de
    Origin: Oasisbr
This work aims to analyze the main monetary policy measures during the pandemic and the effects on the Brazilian economy, exclusively through monetary policies in this period. Transmission mechanisms are fundamental for policy control in times of crisis, from which he identified the monetary policy actions adopted during the pandemic. In this way, the collection of data and documents made available by the national financial institutions, which refers to the research analysis of the behavior of the level of economic activity, unemployment rate, inflation rate and fiscal indicator in this period. The final result of the research was a descriptive analysis of the data obtained, which takes into account the economic approach of transmission mechanisms, of which one of the conclusions, the fact that it is not an inflation of demand but of cost, in addition to the does not effectively combat inflation arising from the factor cost front, the main source of inflationary shocks in the Brazilian economy, makes the mechanism itself ineffective in combating inflation, thus not helping the country to mitigate the impacts in times of crisis.

Persistência e volatilidade do gap da inflação

    Publication

Monetary policy conduct has officially become inflation targeting in Brazil since 1999. In this regime, expectations play a special role, and the interest rate is usually operated as instrument. This paper estimates the time structure of the inflation rate expectations (calendar effect) in the Brazilian economy, from 2001 to 2008, monthly. The empirical analysis applies the method of Auto-Regression Vectors (VAR) to account for the effects of six months ahead forward-looking inflation expectations to interest rate determination, from a reaction function suggested by new macroeconomic consensus. Yet, it takes Granger causality functions, impulse-response analysis and variance decomposition to reach the conclusions. The results suggest that calendar effect has relatively low performance in determining interest rate. Moreover, Brazilian Central Bank is aware of the variations of output gap.

In this paper we do follow a non-stationary discrete approach to model the baseline rate in Brazil. The paper innovates in approaching the decisions in terms of a hike, maintenance or cut in the baseline rate rather than assume that it follows a continuous path. Our model seems to be parsimonious and forecast correctly 83% of the actual Copom decisions. The estimated parameters define a threshold to the Copom actions which is asymmetric, but finds no significant differences between high and low thresholds.

A study on bank credit channel in Brazil: The approach of impulse response functions matching

    Publication

This study addresses the issue of bank lending channel in Brazil, regarding its operability, and the identification of supply and demand for loans effects. To do so, we specify a stylized model that characterizes the behavior of credit supply of banks in an environment of uncertainty about future monetary policy. Subsequently, the work estimates empirical and theoretical impulse response functions, respectively from VECM and DSGE models and uses calibration techniques to obtain minimal distance parameters between these two functions (matching). The main motivation to implement this methodology is the possibility to separate the components of supply and demand for loans, which is a recurrent issue in this research field

The interaction between conventional monetary policy and financial stability : Chile, Colombia, Japan, Portugal and the UK

    Publication
    by Venter, Zoë
The relationship between monetary policy and financial stability has gained importance in recent years as Central Bank policy rates neared the zero-lower bound. The need to coordinate policy choices, to expand the scope of monetary policy measures and lastly, the need to target financial stability objectives while maintaining a primary objective of financial stability, has become essential. We use an SVAR model and impulse response functions to study the impact of monetary policy shocks on three proxies for financial stability as well as a proxy for economic growth. Our main results show that the Central Bank policy rate may be used to correct asset mispricing due to the inverse relationship between the policy rate and the stock market index. The results also show that, in line with theory, the exchange rate appreciates following a positive interest rate shock. Although the impact is only statistically significant for industrial production for the case of the UK, conventional monetary policy may indeed be able to contribute to financial stability when used in conjunction with alternative policy choices.

    Tight money, tight standards

    Publication
    by Opoku, Philemon Kwame
This paper uses a structural vector autoregressive model (SVAR) to study the effect of monetary policy and bank lending standards on business loans. The results are consistent with a dynamic model of bank behaviour that explicitly considers a bank’s soundness position. According to the results of the empirical estimation and prediction of the theoretical model, increases in loans, particularly non-performing loans or delinquency rates due to a monetary policy shock, deteriorate a bank’s health, causing it to apply more stringent lending standards. Thus, the results show that banks raise their lending standards in response to the tightness of money, defined as increases in the demand for the bank’s loans while its resources (reserves or deposits) remain constant. Furthermore, lending standards dominate loan rates in explaining loans and output dynamics.
