Ensino, ofício e prática cirúrgica na obra de Henri de Mondeville: cirurgiões na corte francesa e nos campos de batalha (séculos XIII-XIV)
Publicaçãopor Damaceno, Mauricio RibeiroOrigem: OasisbrThis dissertation is guided by the French physicist-surgeon Henri de Mondeville, his academic trajectory, training and teaching and his performance at the court of Filipe IV, Belo. The main source is and his unfinished work The Surgery, in which he discusses, based on the ancient authorities, Galen and Arabs, Avicenna, on the surgical and therapeutic precepts in the case of war injuries. His training in the field of medicine and surgery and his teaching activities as a master took place in the General Studies of Paris, Montpellier and Bologna. In the latter he did an internship with the famous surgeon Teodorico Borgognoni. Regarding the profession, it can be noted that a number of skills were necessary to be a good surgeon, among them were intellectual skills (knowing the canons and prescriptions for medicines), physical (having strong limbs and thin fingers) and functional (not fear the bad smell, be goodwill, have quick ingenuity). Anatomy was one of the important skills, but it came up against the symbolism that involved the body in the Middle Ages. Finally, in practice, the physical-surgeon could act in the different segments of society, but the place that could give him greater prestige was certainly the court. King Philip IV, O Belo, following a common pattern in the Capetíngia dynasty, recruited at least 20 physicists and surgeons during his reign, especially in times of war with the Flemish. In the battle, the health professional put everything he learned into execution, especially regarding injuries caused by weapons such as arrows and swords. The presence of surgeons and physicists renewed the hopes of those who were wounded in combat. -

Media-Independent Multicast Signalling for Enhanced Video Performance in the MEDIEVAL Project
Publicaçãopor Corujo, DanielOutros Autores: Figueiredo, Sergio; Aguiar, RuiWith the foreseen major increase in video traffic over the coming years, the current Internet’s design is being perceived as inefficient for handling the demanding flow of video over wireless access networks, populated by an ever increasing number of mobile terminals. The MEDIEVAL project aims to evolve the current Internet architecture to provide an optimized video support in all layers of the protocol stack. With its cross-layer approach, abstraction mechanisms such as IEEE802.21 will work as enablers between the different architecture modules. With the widespread diffusion of video being realized over multicast and broadcast channels for resource optimization, using 802.21 signalling to optimize handovers affecting groups of users will generate multiple messages to each individual terminal. In this article, we extend 802.21 to support multicast transport of its signalling, enabling more efficient group handover scenarios. -

Tectos Decorativos em Portugal entre os séculos XIV e XVI. Construção e Lançamento de Proposta para Observatório Piloto.
Publicaçãopor Ladeiro, Inês Moreira de Sá e de SeixasThe study regarding medieval painted ceilings in Portugal, differing from other european countries, is clearly lacking. Appart from occasional analyses regarding Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (190s), the nation-wide reality has only recently been sought after, namely during the Archeology, Art and Patrmony Summer School, by the Arqueology, Art and Patimonial Sciences Study Center of the University of Coimbra, in 2020, during which the project “(Re)Descobrir os tectos pintados em Portugal (sécs. XIV a XVI)” was developed. This project consisted of a preliminary stage in the investigation investigation in this area that allowed investigators to perform the greatest gathering of case studies until date. Ever since the beginning, the need for involving the greatest number of people possible, inside and outside of the academic community, was evident, through making the information gathered so far accessible to all. The course was set for this Project bearing all this in mind, with the objective to build a proposition for the creation of a National Observatory that could be used as an essential for this investigation’s continuity. Apart from its basic function as disclosing information, this observatory should also allow different audiences’ interaction with the website, as there is a possibility to add new case studies so that they’ll be thoroughly investigated. A Portuguese map with all decorative ceilings known up to date, can also be consulted in an interactive fashion, as though by selecting one particular ceiling, the webpage’s visitor shall access photographs and chronological information regarding that very same ceiling. Aside from the making of the www.tectosdecorativos.pt platform, social media related to the observatory were also energized. This project culminated with a launching day event that happened in the Machado de Castro National Museum in Coimbra, which included both adult-directed presentations, as well as an activity specifically targeted at an audience comprised of school children. -

Análise biocultural de indivíduos exumados do Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora (Lisboa)
Publicaçãopor Serafim, Inês Joana BatistaSão Vicente de Fora is a village with a long and plenteous history making it an important component of the Lisbon city. There you can find an unique and important building connected with the first king of Portugal and the battle for the conquest of the city in 1147, the São Vicente de Fora monastery. This dissertation aims to present the results of the analysis of individuals there inhumed, from the XII to XIV centuries. For this study both morphological and metric methodology were used, evaluating biological profile, morphology and present pathologies. From the sample 52,6% were adults, 26,3% young adults, 10,5% adolescents, 5,3% children and 5,3% infants; 73,3% were male, 20% female and one was undetermined. The stature ranged from 154 and 157 for females and 155 to 170 for males. Concerning morphology, 50% of the femurs were platymeric, 33,3% hyperpletymeric and 16,6% eurimeric, all had a weak pilaster, 50% had weak robusticity, 25% medium and 25% were very robust. As for the tibia, 66,6% had euricnemic indexes, 33,4% mesocnemmic, 50% and medium robusticity, 25% weak and 25% strong. In respect to dental pathology 29,75% have ante mortem tooth loss and 12,05% post mortem, 4 individuals have caries, being the total number of caries 5. There are 5 individuals with osteoarthrosis, 4 with Schmorl nodules. There are entheseal changes in the vertebral column, humerus, ulna, iliac crest, femur, patella and calcaneus. There are 3 cases of non-specific infectious disease. 2 individuals have cribra orbitalia and 2 have cribra femoralis, adults and non-adults. Seven individuals have fractures, there’s a possible case of sinusitis, one of DISH and three of congenital pathology. A possible case of African ancestrality. Another of peri mortem lesions. There was also a box full with disconnected bones with pathological lesions. There was a cranium with a trepanation, 3 possible DISH occurrences, one of rickets, one of osteomyelitis, multiple cases of fractures, one of them that brought several mobility constrains. This work made possible the understanding of some of the informations given about São Vicente de Fora in medieval times, hopefully contributing to a better understanding of the local past, while also increasing the scope of works about Lisbon at that time. In the future, expectantly, it will be possible to study more of the material recovered from the church and monastery of São Vicente de Fora. -

Pediatric chronic osteomyelitis in the outskirts of Al-Ushbuna (Carnide, Lisboa, Portugal)
Publicaçãopor Tavares, AnaOutros Autores: Makhoul, Calil; Monteiro, Mário; Curate, FranciscoThe skeletal remains of seven individuals (five non-adults and two adults) were recovered during an archeological intervention in the township of Carnide (Lisbon, Portugal). Funerary anthropology strongly suggests that the sample is from the Medieval Islamic period (8th − 12th centuries AD). This report presents a case of chronic osteomyelitis in a non-adult individual. The diagnostic is substantiated by the presence of pathognomonic signs of osteomyelitis, including the presence of cloacae and a sequestrum in the left tibia. The bone infection is discussed in the context of inadequate socioeconomic conditions. This case from a relatively unfamiliar chronology and cultural context supplements the uncommon paleopathological descriptions of osteomyelitis in non-adults from historical populations.
