Experimental characterisation of WiMAX propagation in different environments
Publicationby Robalo, Daniel Luís SilveiraOther Authors: Oliveira, João; Velez, Fernando; Petrini, Valeria; Barbiroli, Marina; Carciofi, Claudia et al.Origin: uBibliorumThe aim of this work is to continue the cooperation on Fixed WiMAX experimental propagation characterization between Instituto de Telecomunicações - DEM of University of Beira Interior, Portugal, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni and the Department of Electronics and Information Systems of the University of Bologna, both from Italy. The field trials addressed different environments, i.e., suburban and open areas in a hilly terrain for the study of the propagation characteristics of WiMAX systems. The IEEE 802.16-2004 equipment operates at 3.5 GHz with a bandwidth of 3.5 MHz. Different antenna heights are considered. The measurements have been performed in outdoor, indoor and mixed environments, with omnidirectional and 120° sectored antennas. In the outdoor environment, results show an adequacy between the trend-curve for the experimental results with the modified Friis equation with propagation exponent 2.71. -

Publicationby Soares, Cassia BaldiniOther Authors: Yonekura, TatianaOrigin: OasisbrThe objective of this study is to report on the experience of constructing and using an instrument to collect and analyze theoretical-methodological references of studies, in systematic literature reviews. The goal is for researchers to have available an instrument that is appropriate for evaluating the studies that present their theoretical foundations, and for health professionals to have access to the theoretical explanations for study results and their applications in the practice of health care. The dissociation of theory from practice may lead to a lack of motivation at the work site and practices of repeating procedures without any awareness of the underlying concepts that base the interpretation of a health-disease phenomenon. Therefore we call on researchers to conduct reviews on the theoretical foundations of certain health-disease phenomena and we propose questions related to the inclusion criteria, critical appreciation and data extraction to be addressed in instruments. -

Comparative analysis of the visualization of small files using digital and conventional radiography
Publicationby Pace, Sandra Regina BoarinOther Authors: Habitante, Sandra MárciaOrigin: OasisbrThe present work was designed to carry out a comparative analysis of the visualization of small files using digital and conventional radiographs. Forty maxillary molars inserted in human skulls were used; Maillefer K-files #06, #08, #10 and #15 were inserted in the mesiobuccal canals and measured at 0.5mm beyond and 1.5mm before the tip with 0.5-mm intervals, in order to allow five professionals to observe whether the files were at the limit, before or beyond the foramen when visualized on conventional radiographs taken on Insight Kodak film (Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY, USA) and with the RVG digital system (Trophy). Based on the results obtained, the conclusions were: with the two systems it was possible to visualize #06 K-files in nearly 60% of the evaluated cases; for the others, #08, #10 and #15 K-files, visualization was higher with both radiographic systems, achieving 82% of correct visualization for #15 K-files with the conventional system. The differences between the results of the two systems studied - conventional (Insight film, Kodak F-speed) and last generation digital (RVG - Trophy) radiographs - were not statistically significant according to the Student's t test. -

Statistical methods for assessing agreement between double readings of clinical measurements
Publicationby Vieira, SoniaOther Authors: Corrente, José EduardoOrigin: OasisbrStatistical analysis of data is crucial in cephalometric investigations. There are certainly excellent examples of good statistical practice in the field, but some articles published worldwide have carried out inappropriate analyses. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to show that when the double records of each patient are traced on the same occasion, a control chart for differences between readings needs to be drawn, and limits of agreement and coefficients of repeatability must be calculated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from a well-known paper in Orthodontics were used for showing common statistical practices in cephalometric investigations and for proposing a new technique of analysis. RESULTS: A scatter plot of the two radiograph readings and the two model readings with the respective regression lines are shown. Also, a control chart for the mean of the differences between radiograph readings was obtained and a coefficient of repeatability was calculated. CONCLUSIONS: A standard error assuming that mean differences are zero, which is referred to in Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics as the Dahlberg error, can be calculated only for estimating precision if accuracy is already proven. When double readings are collected, limits of agreement and coefficients of repeatability must be calculated. A graph with differences of readings should be presented and outliers discussed. -

Backhaul steering for dual band WiFi Mesh
Publicationby Soares, João Francisco OliveiraOver the years, WiFi became an essential technology to most people. The success of the introduction of wireless devices with WiFi connectivity like laptops, smartphones, IoT sensors and others, increased the demand for better WiFi networks. Since many people have and use WiFi networks in their homes, jobs and in public places, this is an area that draws a lot of attention. The networks need better service and better coverage. To solve this challenge, WiFi Alliance developed WiFi EasyMesh, a standard for WiFi networks that utilize multiple access points that allow an easy setup and compatibility with WiFi certified devices. This technology is able to create wireless mesh networks over the WiFi protocol to increase the signal coverage. Besides this solution, the release of a new WiFi standard (WiFi 6) was also important. This new release improved the overall rates a WiFi transmission can achieve, and also introduced a set of new features that positively impact the users. This dissertation’s main objectives were to show that the use of several frequencies (2.4GHz and 5GHz) in the backhaul links of a mesh network could increase the overall performance, and to create and test a mechanism that would adapt the network topology when needed. After defining several scenarios and executing them, the obtained results showed that there are in fact situations where the use of a different frequency (2.4GHz) beyond 5GHz would increase the network’s performance. The scenarios tested multiple aspects on the mesh network such as the amount of traffic, the number of hops and frequency used by each link. The proposed mechanism showed that it was capable of identifying the need to change the network and actually change it in run-time, so it could benefit from the adoption of a new backhaul topology.
