Persuasion Techniques Used in Netflix’s Communication Campaigns

    Publication
    by Perpectuo Figueiredo, Ana Carolina
    Other Authors: Engrácio, Handerson
This case study aims to understand which persuasion techniques were used in two Netflix communication campaigns. To this end, we present a study that starts from a bibliographic search using books, scientific articles and multimedia files on the theme of persuasion and its framing in communication campaigns. Then we selected two Netflix campaigns, collecting the data on the Youtube platform. Then, a qualitative content analysis was carried out, in which six persuasion principles of the author Robert Cialdini (2020) and other persuasion techniques such as classical rhetoric figures were identified. In this sense, it was found that in both campaigns under analysis, with regard to Cialdini's six principles of persuasion, were used the principles of coherence and commitment and scarcity. The rhetorical technics, emotion, hyperbole, music, altercasting, influence of the means chosen in the interpretation. repetition and alliteration were identified in both campaigns. Finally, it was found that there is also the possibility that manipulation techniques have been used since three arguments constituted using the formal fallacy of the consequent statement were identified in the analyzed campaigns.

O desenvolvimento judicial do direito: construções, criatividade interpretativa e técnicas manipulativas

    Publication
    by Gonçalves, Gabriel Accioly
    Origin: Oasisbr

Securities-based earnings management in nanks: validation of a two-stage model

    Publication
    by Dantas, José Alves
Other Authors: Medeiros, Otávio Ribeiro de; Galdi, Fernando Caio; Costa, Fábio Moraes da
    Origin: Oasisbr
Studies investigating earnings management in banks have been particularly concerned with the use of Loan Loss Provisions (LLP) and mainly use two-stage models to identify discretionary management actions. Another type of record that has received attention from researchers in identifying discretionary management actions is the classification and measurement of the fair value of securities. In this case, however, one-stage models have prevailed. The present study aims to develop and validate a two-stage model for the identification of discretionary management actions using gains obtained from securities. Our model incorporates macroeconomic indicators and specific attributes of the securities portfolios to the traditional parameters used in models previously utilized in the literature. To validate the proposed model, the results are compared with the results from the estimation of a one-stage model - a methodology widely used in the literature. Tests conducted with the two models reveal evidence of income smoothing using securities and the classification of available-for-sale securities among the actions taken by management. The consistency of the results across the two models validates the proposed model, thereby contributing to the development of research on the topic that is not only concerned with determining whether earnings management is practiced but also whether it can be associated with other variables. We also find that securities-based earnings management is more significant in smaller-sized banks and in banks controlled by private capital.

The words of the political opponent: 'represented discourse' as an expression of opinion

    Publication
    by Domínguez, Patrícia
    Origin: Oasisbr
This paper aims to analyze how the political speaker resorts to quoting the opponent's words to convey his own ideology. To this end, the speaker manifests subjectivity via several linguistic resources. Our theoretical framework is supported by enunciative concepts such as "represented discourse" (Rabatel, 2003) and "point of view" (Rabatel, 1998). Ideological aspects are approached according to Thompson's (1990) sociolinguistic proposal on the modes of operation of ideology. The methodology focuses on the linguistic analysis of excerpts drawn from three political speeches delivered at the UN. Thus, the scope of the study is to characterize the linguistic inscription of subjectivity as present in the sample. On the basis of the results, we demonstrate how quoting allows the speaker to introduce two contradictory points of view by assuming a certain degree of responsibility towards the words summoned up by means of "mental process verbs" (Rabatel, 2003) which convey opinions and emotions.

Vision-based detection of resin drums for robotic arm manipulation

    Publication
    by Fahla, Nuno Santos
More and more, industries are focusing on the digitalization of industrial processes through Industry 4.0 strategies that connect the devices in their systems. The adoption of Digital Twin systems is one of these strategies, offering manufacturers greater insight into their systems’ performance, potential issues and possible data-driven improvements, through its virtual counterpart. In the context of the Integrated Project RN21, this dissertation aims to study an alternative that improves the natural resin processing industry by developing a vision-based system for the detection and manipulation of resin drums through a robotic arm, that ensures a continuous and efficient execution of the whole drum handling production process. This system intends to serve as the foundational digital model with potential to evolve into a Digital Twin. The proposed solution describes the developed system’s approach for drum detection and manipulation, as well as its entities and the established communication network between them. A control agent acts as the main processing entity, as it is responsible for monitoring and controlling the environment. This agent fetches data from sensors in order to apply a deep learning-based recognition model and execute a series of computer vision operations to estimate the drums’ world coordinates based a camera’s captured image. Additionally, it identifies the most adequate drum to manipulate and determines the optimal trajectory for the robotic arm to follow for a successful task execution, without grazing or colliding with other objects. To validate the implemented solution, a set of experiments was conducted dividing the system’s main tasks of drum detection, ellipse validation, drum localization and drum transportation. The results showed that the proposed solution was successful in autonomously handling detection and manipulation of natural resin drums.

    Publication
    by Palminha, Joana Isabel Mariano

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) cryptic species Mediterranean (MED), is a destructive insect pest worldwide. In order to contribute to controlling B. tabaci by non-chemical methods, we examined the possibility of using a combination of trap/barrier crops and a parasitoid natural enemy in cotton. We performed field experiments using cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) as trap crops and maize (Zea mays) as a barrier crop combined with periodic releases of the parasitoid Eretmocerus hayati in Hebei Province, Northern China. All treatments significantly reduced immature whitefly densities. Parasitism rate was significantly higher in cotton plots intercropped with sunflower and with perimeter-planted cantaloupe. Adult whitefly density was negatively related to parasitoid abundance and was significantly lower in cotton plots intercropped with maize than in the control plots. Intercropping was more effective than perimeter-planting at reducing B. tabaci densities and increasing yield. Parasitoid dispersal was not hampered by barrier crops, indicating that the two methods of control are compatible. These results contribute to the development of integrated pest management methods against this important pest.
