Single Mach-Zehnder interferometer based optical Boolean logic gates

In this paper, we demonstrate different optical logic gates using a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer with controlled phase modulators in each arm. The operational conditions to obtain 16 optical logic circuits, using the same design, are investigated and are a result of a constructive or destructive interference process. The proposed configuration presents significant low complexity and high scalability, and its feasibility is evaluated through numerical simulations.

Three-dimensional (3D) contouring has become very important in industry and in many other production systems. The optical techniques provide many attractive properties for such measurement due to their precision, reliability, accuracy and ability to measure small and fragile objects. In this work we report the study, the development and the performance of a low-cost optical device based on interferogram projection in order to measure the sub-millimetric relief of polymeric plates containing biomimetic textures used in the automotive industry. The interferogram was generated by a Twyman-Green interferometer illuminated by a 532-nm green laser. The measurement was performed by means of phase-shifting and phase-unwrapping procedures and the results were benchmarked with the ones obtained by a commercial device.

Laser interferometry is a well-established technique for the characterization of piezoelectric actuators. In this work, by using a low cost Michelson interferometer, the measurement of the calibration factor and the displacement amplification of a novel piezoelectric flextensional actuator (PFA), designed by using the topology optimization method, is performed. A simple method, based on small phase modulation depth when the PFA is driven by a triangular waveform, allows the absolute interferometer calibration. The free-displacement of the PFA for various drive voltages is measured and the displacement amplification is determined. The linearity and frequencyresponse of the PFA are evaluated up to 20 kHz

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a way to simplify the design of microstructured optical fibres with high sensitivity to applied pressure. The use of a capillary fibre with an embedded core allows the exploration of the pressure-induced material birefringence due to the capillary wall displacements and the photoelastic effect. An analytical description of pressure-induced material birefringence is provided, and fibre modal characteristics are explored through numerical simulations. Moreover, a capillary fibre with an embedded core is fabricated and used to probe pressure variations. Even though the embedded-core fibre has a non-optimized structure, measurements showed a pressure sensitivity of (1.04 +/- 0.01(nm/bar, which compares well with more complex, specially designed fibre geometries reported in the literature. These results demonstrate that this geometry enables a novel route towards the simplification of microstructured fibre-based pressure sensors
