José Pinto Azeredo and “The Birth of the Clinic”. A Reference in Portuguese Medicine

    Publication
    by Abecasis, Pedro
In academic circles and among historians, the work ofthe doctor José Pinto de Azeredo has been made knownin recent years. This clinician worked in Brazil, Angola andPortugal at the end of the 18th century and the beginningof the 19th century and left a valuable medical legacy lyingdormant for more than two hundred years in national libraries and archives. With the support of the GulbenkianFoundation and the work of a large luso-brazilian team, fourvolumes have now been recovered and published, allowingthe dissemination of his remarkable work. It follows the movement described at the same time by Michel Foucault in hisseminal work, “Naissance de la Clinique” as the emergence of Modern Medicine. Presented and disseminated at Conferences and Symposia in the Literature and History circles,it is only right that this work should be made known to thewider medical community. Pioneer in its time in many aspects, in addition to the beauty and clarity of its prose, itmaintains a surprising relevance for the new medical generations and in particular for internists.

    Publication
    by Santos, Raquel Alcides dos
    Origin: Oasisbr

Representations of the medical-eugenic discourse about progeny: mendelist eugenics in the doctoral theses of the Medicine and Surgery College of São Paulo [Faculdade de Medicina e...

    Publication
    by Verzolla, Beatriz Lopes Porto
    Other Authors: Mota, André
    Origin: Oasisbr

Sociology, medicine and the construction of health-related sociology

    Publication
    by Barros, Nelson Filice de
    Other Authors: Nunes, Everardo Duarte
    Origin: Oasisbr
Starting from a paper about closing the gap between sociology and medicine in Brazil and the United Kingdom that was published in 1971, a historical update was made with the aim of reflecting on the new shapes of health-related teaching and research within the social and human sciences, in these two countries. The methodology was qualitative and the study was developed using secondary data. The reflections were developed through the authors' immersion in Brazilian and British realities. It was concluded that the interface between sociology and health has expanded, although persistent old difficulties exist in relation to the structure and focus of the healthcare system, medical school power and medical student culture.

Pari passu: Historiography and Science of the Plague in Portugal (1832-2021)

    Publication
by Oliveira da Silva, André Filipe
Historical research and historiographical production have always been strongly connected both with the past they study and with the present they are produced in. Inside this universe, History of Science offers valuable examples of parallel evolution of science in its most diverse dimensions and of the interpretation of its past.  Talking about the study of past epidemics, specifically, the relation between what is known about a disease in a certain moment and what is written about past occurrences of that disease is not just evident but cannot also be forgotten when the history of that historiography is written. The aim of this brief paper is to analyse the evolution of Portuguese historiography about medieval plague epidemics, especially Black Death, confronting it with the evolution of the scientific knowledge about that disease throughout the decades and determining how fast did Portuguese historians integrate that knowledge in their own historical analysis. From miasmatical theory until the definition of microbial theory of diseases, from the discovery of the plague bacillus (and little after, the vectorial transmission) to the confirmation of the identity of plague bacteria as the responsible for Black Death, all these discoveries influenced the way past plagues were studied and understood. Cultivating a symbiotic relationship since a long time ago, Natural and Life Sciences, at one side, and History, at the other, move forward together, establishing bridges that benefit both and allow the production of a scientific knowledge progressively more rigorous, transversal and useful.

    ACHILES: AN IMORTAL EPONYMOUS

    Publication
    by MANSUR,NACIME SALOMÃO BARBACHAN
    Other Authors: TAMAOKI,MARCEL JUN SUGAWARA
    Origin: Oasisbr
ABSTRACT The conditions affecting the calcaneal tendon remain extremely prevalent in the clinical practice. The search for information about these diseases in national and international scientific databases are commonly hampered in the use of search tools, requiring the use if an eponym in the strategy. Achilles, in reference to the hero of the Greek mythology, is often used by several authors in scientific publications despite the new Nomina Anatomica. Objective: This article intends to recover the history behind the use of this term, which heroically resists in the clinical discussions of everyday life in articles and textbooks. Level of Evidence V, Literature Review.
