This introduction to the special issue “Geography & Entrepreneurship: Managing Growth and Change” in the Journal of The Knowledge Economy includes a collection of seven papers. Through theoretical and empirical research, this special issue aims to clarify the connection between geography and entrepreneurship. In doing so, growth strategies and change trajectories of countries, regions, and firms are analyzed. The papers use extensive data that enable the models to provide a rich picture of how academic institutions, companies, and regional governments contribute to regional development. As a result, these studies provide new perspectives on regional entrepreneurial transformation. Theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and their application to several contexts provide an advancement of our understanding about Geography and Entrepreneurship. Perspectives on R&D and knowledge, internationalization strategies, high-growth businesses, technological entrepreneurs, university spin-offs, transnational entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial networks are dominant themes included in this special issue. A brief description of the authors’ contributions is offered to attract a broader readership.

Gago Coutinho was one of the two Portuguese navigators that crossed by air the South Atlantic in the beginning of the 20th century. He developed a new model of sextant that could be used to measure the altitude of a star when flying without the need of the sea horizon. This new instrument was called "precision sextant" and used an artificial horizon line which was defined with the help of a water bubble. Due to his knowledge of Navigation, Astronomy, Geography and Mathematics he received from the Portuguese King D. Carlos I several assignments in Africa and Asia. Gago Coutinho received several important official medals and prizes, including the PhD Honoris Causa from the Universities of Lisbon and Oporto, and authored several scientific publications. He received the distinct position of Admiral of the Portuguese Navy in 1958, and died in the following year.

The growing use that students make of digital social networks on mobile devices in the world, opens up a vast possibility of their use in the school context. The Facebook, due to its characteristics, has been used as a platform to support the teaching and learning process in several regions of the world, however, its impact on academic performance is not consensual. It is believed that the use of Facebook in a context of insufficient academic management platforms, may be a useful tool for increasing students' academic performance. Thus, this study aims to analyze the impact of using Facebook on academic performance in the discipline of Geography. The research had a quasi-experimental design, in which 55 undergraduate students in Teaching of Geography from the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences of Huíla - ISCED (Angola) participated, divided into an experimental group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 23). The results revealed that the average in the final grade in the discipline was significantly higher in the experimental group, as well as the average obtained in the classification in a knowledge assessment test. Based on this, it is concluded that the use of Facebook tools to support the teaching and learning process had a significant positive effect on students' academic performance, with this effect having increased over time.

    Geografia e questões epistemológicas: a totalidade homem-meio e a superação do arquétipo N-H-E

    Publicação
por Silva, Renata da Silva Fernandes
    Origem: Oasisbr

    Origem: Oasisbr
The modern western society has been structured around a fragmentary world view, and that has permeated the spatial practices ever since. This movement has reflections in the relationship between cities and watercourse, producing a way of contradictory appropriation, that demonstrates the idea of nature domination with the adequacy to the dynamic of the city, the canalization of watercourses being the spatial form that express such view. It is the case of Ribeirão Pirapitinga in Catalão (GO), which had 3.323 linear meters channeled within the city. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the city-watercourse relationship, from the multiple determinations and consequences of watercourse canalization, emphasizing the Ribeirão Pirapitinga canalization, in Catalão City, as a practical example of this fragmentation process in the society-nature relationship. In the first chapter, aspects related to society-nature relationship will be presented, focusing on the city-watercourse relationship, based on the practice of canalization, with its multiple determinations and consequences. In the second chapter, it will be time to approach the specific study object, that is, the city-watercourse relationship in Catalão (GO). Finally, the third chapter, intends to contemplate proposals for another form of relationship between cities and watercourses.

Marked by a trajectory of uncertainties and neglect of the public power, the Education of Youths and Adults (EJA) was recognized as a modality of education based on the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (LDB No. 9.394 / 96). In Goiás, the EJA Guidelines were published in 2013, which set out the content, thematic axes and learning expectations for each of the disciplines, which originated the Reference Curriculum of the State Educational Network of Goiás (single curriculum), an instrument that, aiming at the heterogeneity of the public, whether by age group or in economic, social and cultural aspects, must be elaborated to meet these specificities. With the purpose of ensuring the effective application of the curriculum, institutional instruments of control were created, such as bimonthralization of contents, the Administrative and Pedagogical System (SIAP), the Recognition Program (subsidy) and state external evaluations. In view of this scenario, the main objective of this research is to analyze the Geography Curriculum of the State Educational Network of Goiás and its effectiveness in relation to the needs of this. Regarding the specific objectives, we highlight: understanding the process of historical constitution of the EJA in the national and state context; to investigate the curricular proposals of Geography in the Federal and State scope directed to the Second Stage of the Elementary School in the modality EJA; to verify the relationship between the bimonthly curriculum and the didactic book of Geography, for that we use as methodology the bibliographic study. In order to deal with the teaching of Geography in contemporary times and the formation of Geography teachers, especially for the EJA, we use theoreticians such as Freire (1997, 1999, 2002); André (2001); Pimenta (1999); Machado (2008), based on authors like Santos (1998, 2000, 2006), Straforini (2008), Carlos (2007), Cavalcanti (2008), Vesentini (2008), among others. To understand the trajectories of the EJA in Brazil we base ourselves on Haddad and Di Pierro (2000); Romão and Gadotti (2007); Gadotti (2009); Di Pierro (2010); Viegas and Moraes (2017). In addition, documentary research was also carried out with special attention to the Curricular Matrix of Goiás of the second stage of Elementary Education of the EJA. The aim of this research is to contribute to studies in the area of curriculum and geography teaching for adolescents, youth, adults and the elderly, especially in the State of Goiás in front of the implantation of the bimonthly curriculum, emphasizing the importance and value of teaching work.
