    Publication
    by Almeida, Rui M.P.
Other Authors: Antontsev, Stanislav N.; Duque, José C. M.
    Origin: uBibliorum
The aim of this paper is the numerical study of a class of nonlinear nonlocal degenerate parabolic equations. The convergence and error bounds of the solutions are proved for a linearized Crank–Nicolson–Galerkin finite element method with polynomial approximations of degree k≥1. Some explicit solutions are obtained and used to test the implementation of the method in Matlab environment.

Development of a model of the human brain using hexahedral finite elements

    Publication
by Gomes, Marcos António Spínola Monteiro
Traumatic brain injury is a significant problem worldwide, particularly in the United States of America, where 1.7 million TBIs are documented annually. The tests required for this assessment are very complex. Tests on cadavers may raise serious ethical questions, and in-vivo crash tests are not viable. In this context, there is a great need for developing finite element models of the human head, such as the YEAHM, developed by members of the University of Aveiro. For this reason, this dissertation aims to improve the YEAHM, especially its brain components, by studying how it behaves under different finite element types. The finite element formulation is of utmost importance for the general accuracy and efficiency of the models. Several validations were performed, comparing the simulation results against the experimental results. The simulations with hexahedral elements, under specific conditions, obtained better results with a lower computational cost.

Traumatic brain injury is a significant problem worldwide. In the United States of America, around 1.7 million cases are documented annually, displaying the need for a deeper understanding of the effects on the human brain. The tests required for this assessment are very complex. Tests on cadavers may raise serious ethical questions, and in vivo crash tests are not viable. In this context, there is a great need to developing finite element head models (FEHM) to study the biomechanics of the tissues when submitted to a certain impact or acceleration/deceleration scenario. An excellent compromise between accuracy and CPU efficiency is always desirable for a FEHM, For this reason, this work focuses on the improvement of an existing head model, including the study of the behavior of the brain using distinct finite element types. The finite element type and formulation is of utmost importance for the general accuracy and efficiency of the models. Several validations were performed, comparing the simulation results against experimental data. The simulations with hexahedral elements, under specific conditions, obtained more accurate results with a lower computational cost. Using hexahedrals, a comparison was also performed using two material characterizations with more than 10 years apart, using the latest finite element head model validation experiment. Overall, the newer material model displays a less stiff response, although its implementation must always depend on the overall purpose of the model it is being applied to.

Analysis of reinforced concrete elements exposed to fire after earthquake

    Publication
    by Vitorino, Hugo Manuel Mendes
    Origin: IC-online

Optimization of fibers orientation in a composite specimen

    Publication
    by Monte, Sara M. C.
Other Authors: Infante, Vírginia; Moleiro, Filipa; Madeira, J. F. A.
The main purpose of this study was to optimize the fibers orientation in a composite specimen with the objective to minimize the displacement. This composite specimen can be used in aerospace or mechanical structures. The objective function was performed with static analysis by altering the fibers orientation in a finite element solid model, computed using the ANSYS program. A recent method for global optimization GLODS (Global and local optimization using direct search) was used for the optimization process. In the sequence, specimens were manufactured and experimental tested, in o order to validate the numerical results obtained.

Buckling and Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis of Sandwich Structures

    Publication
    by Moita, J. S.
    Other Authors: Araújo, A. L.; Correia, Victor M. Franco; Soares, C. M. Mota; Soares, C. A. Mota
In this work a finite element model is presented for buckling and nonlinear analysis of multilayer sandwich plates and shells, with a soft core sandwiched between stiff elastic layers. The finite element is obtained by assembling all element-layers through the thickness using specific assumptions on the displacement continuity at the interfaces between layers, but allowing for different behaviors of the layers. The stiff elastic layers are modelled using the classic plate theory and the core is modelled using Reddy׳s third order shear deformation theory. The present finite element model is a non-conforming triangular plate/shell element with 24 degrees of freedom for the generalized displacements. This model is applied in the solution of illustrative examples and the results are presented and discussed.

Advances in FEEL++ : A domain specific embedded language in C++ for partial differential equations

    Publication
    by Prud'homme, C.
Other Authors: Chabannes, V.; Doyeux, V.; Ismail, M.; Samake, A.; Pena, Gonçalo et al.
This paper presents an overview of a unified seamlessly parallel framework for finite element and spectral element methods in 1D, 2D and 3D in C++ called FEEL++. The article provides a digression through the design of the library as well as the main abstractions handled by it, namely, meshes, function spaces, operators, linear and bilinear forms and an embedded variational language. In every case, the closeness between the language developed in FEEL++ and the equivalent mathematical objects is highlighted. More advanced mathematical methods e.g. the mortar, Schwartz (non)overlapping, three fields and two ficticious domain-like methods (the Fat Boundary Method and the Penalty Method) are described here.

    Publication
    by Curralo, Bárbara Sofia Afonso

Modelling of anisotropic work-hardening behaviour of metallic materials subjected to strain-path changes

    Publication
    by Bouvier, S.
    Other Authors: Alves, J. L.; Oliveira, M. C.; Menezes, L. F.
The present paper aims at reviewing some recent progress in developing advanced constitutive models which are devoted to the description of the anisotropic work-hardening behaviour under strain-path changes at large strains of metallic materials. After reviewing some microscopic and macroscopic experimental evidence, a physically-based phenomenological model using four internal state tensor variables is presented. This model can be simplified into several classical phenomenological models in order to take into account either the isotropic or the kinematic hardening or both. The implementation of the proposed models in the in-house finite element code DD3IMP is briefly recalled. Numerical simulations of the stamping of a curved rail are carried out in order to evaluate the accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed models in modelling the springback.

Finite-element analysis for the performance of steel frames under fire after earthquake

    Publication
    by Merouani, Mohammed Redha
Other Authors: Kada, Abdelhak; Lamri, Belkacem; Piloto, P.A.G.
Recent events of fire after an earthquake (FAE) show that this is a frequent dual event leading to a significant loss which can only be reduced by increasing the level of safety. This paper presents numerical models developed for FAE analyses on 24 steel portal frames to investigate their behaviour and estimate the performance in terms of ratios with regard to horizontal displacement, fire resistance time, and critical temperature. In this study, validated numerical models are used for a parametric study to explore the effect of number of bays and stories on the performance of steel frames under two fire scenarios. Frames with one bay and one story are designed with the Algerian seismic code, RPA99v2003, considering the seismic region of Chlef and other frames are checked with Eurocode for the ultimate limit state. All frames subjected to the seismic and the ISO834 fire actions are simulated within a single software, ANSYS, for pushover and thermo-mechanical analyses. The performance is evaluated, by FAE analysis for damaged frames remaining in the plastic state and undamaged frames not reaching the plastic state, and compared to those subjected to fire without earthquake (FWoE). The frames under FAE are more vulnerable to fire and increasing damage is produced and hence reducing their structural performance. The results also show that the higher the number of bays is, the higher the performance of the frames. The critical temperature of beams decreases with the beam length. The frames with FAE, under inelastic conditions, have smaller fire resistance, when compared to undamaged frames.
