A modular architecture with local processing methodologies for Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems.
Publicationby Gouveia, Gonçalo PaivaThe trend toward modular Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) has been driven by the growing demand for more efficient, reliable, robust data processing and secure communication. Modular hardware systems are designed to be flexible, scalable, and adaptable to changing requirements. They are essential for scenarios where there is a need to apply a wide variety of solutions. In this context, the distribution of data processing and improvements in communication technology made it possible to quickly collect, process and transmit data within multiple components. Computation distribution has increased the efficiencyand speed of data processing and made it possible to handle more complex algorithms and models for real-time applications. This project implemented a modular architecture, incorporating the concept of local processing in which data acquisition, processing, and data analysis are carried out closer to where data is generated. Moreover, to feed intelligent computational methodologies, such as predictive maintenance models, sensor data were acquired and processed to frequency domain using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and in a System on Chip (SoC).Furthermore, different Ethernet-based communication protocols were studied to facilitate easy integration of modules into the distributed architecture. The EtherCAT network protocol was chosen to be established, due to its deterministic and real-time characteristics. To improve the network’s availability it was studied the reduction of data transmission methods. The primary objective of this implementation was to optimize data transmissionover the network by selectively sending only the essential characteristics of the dataset, instead of transmitting it entirely. The focus was multiple curve-fitting methods, leading to the implementation of the Cubic Spline algorithm and proving significant network efficiency enhancement. Both an EtherCAT slave device and the cubic spline were implemented within a SoC.The modular architecture developed in this project enables easy integration of new modules into the system and effective acquirement and process data from field sensors. Tests were made with sensors located over different positions within a horizontal cement ball mill. Such research is of utmost significance in advancing the domain of predictive maintenance and enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and dependability of predictive models for new applications. -

Smart gateways for IOT-Factory integration: trends and use case
Publicationby Rubio, Eva MaseroOther Authors: Torres, Pedro; Dionísio, Rogério PaisThis book chapter proposes a description of smart gateways and cyber-physical systems (CPS) for the industrial internet of things (I-IOT). It also presents a case study where a smart gateway is developed to be used in different types of industrial equipment for the shop floor. The case study is developed under the specifications of different industries in the region of Castelo Branco. It is a proof that the 4th industrial revolution will be the engine for SME innovation, independence of the regions and their financial strength. It is also proof that the cooperation between universities, industries and startups can evolve to break barriers and add value in the improvement of regional industries competitiveness. Topics that will be addressed on the chapter can be used for developers, students, researchers and enthusiasts to learn topics related to I-IOT, such as data acquisitions systems, wired and wireless communication devices and protocols, OPC servers and LabVIEW programming.
