This work reports a novel approach for growing layered double hydroxide (LDH) films on any plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coated AA2024 independently of the nature of the PEO coating. The specific PEO coating chosen to carry out this work is considered to be not suitable for direct LDH growth because of phase composition and morphological features. In this paper, we describe a new methodology that consists of covering the PEO coating with a thin layer of aluminum oxide based xerogel as the source of aluminate ions for subsequent in-situ LDH growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed a successful formation of LDHs on the surface. An improvement in terms of active corrosion protection was also demonstrated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET).

MgCa and MgGd series of alloys are often reported as promising candidates for biomedical applications. In the present study, cytotoxicity and corrosion behavior of Mg1Ca and Mg10Gd alloys in different electrolytes (NaCl, PBS, MEM) have been investigated in order to make a direct comparison and understand the mechanisms behind their performance. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to analyze corrosion processes depending on media composition, whereas X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate crystalline structure, phase composition and surface morphology of the corroded substrates after immersion in the different electrolytes. Moreover, cytotoxicity of the Mg alloys was assessed using the WST-1 reduction and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assays in L929 mouse fibroblasts. The electrochemical results showed that Mg1Ca has a lower degradation rate when compared to Mg10Gd, due to the lower microgalvanic effects and the presence of Ca as an alloying element. Furthermore, the corrosion activity is reduced in MEM, for both alloys, when compared to NaCl and PBS. The cytotoxicity assays revealed that Mg10Gd was cytotoxic in all the conditions tested, while the toxicity of Mg1Ca was low. Overall, these findings show that Mg1Ca alloy presents a higher corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and is a promising material to be used in biomedical implants

In this work we report the synthesis of polyurea microcapsules loaded with corrosion inhibitor 2 mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) for corrosion protection of 2024 aluminum alloy. The microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polycondensation. The resulting capsules exhibit spherical shape, with diameter ranging between 100 nm and 2 lm. The loading content of MBT was found to be 5 wt% and release studies showed that MBT is preferentially released under acidic and alkaline conditions and follows a Fickian dif fusion model. This pH dependency seems suitable for protection of metallic alloys where corrosion pro cesses are accompanied by local pH changes. Furthermore, the microcapsules were added to a hybrid sol gel coating and its performance assessed by electrochemical and accelerated standard tests. The results obtained indicate that capsules loaded with MBT do not affect negatively the barrier properties of sol gel coatings, and contribute for the enhancement of adhesion of coatings to the metallic substrate. More rele vant, these additives impart active corrosion protection suppressing corrosion activity at defect sites, which opens prospects for application of polyurea microcapsules as additives for high performance coatings.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with corrosion inhibitive species are considered as promising additives to protection coatings. However, the conventional method of LDH preparation via co-precipitation followed by anion exchange is a water consuming and slow process hardly applicable to industrial use. In this work, a novel approach to LDH synthesis via hydration of sol-gel prepared mixed metal oxides and two-step anion exchange, all assisted by high-power sonication, was applied. Mg—Al and Mg-Al-Ce LDH with cations ratios 2:1 and 2:0.9:0.1, respectively, intercalated with corrosion inhibitive dihydrogen phosphate anion were successfully prepared. The obtained LDH were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Anion release from these LDH in NaCl solutions and their corrosion inhibitive action on cast iron samples were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the dihydrogen-phosphate-intercalated LDHs produced using the novel technique are efficient in corrosion protection.

ABSTRACT: Among the strategies employed to protect metallic materials, coatings can be considered as one of the most successful and cost-effective alternatives to increase the service lifetime of metallic structures, particularly in industries that are continuously exposed to changing and hard weather conditions such as shipbuilding, automobile, aerospace, marine and oil & gas energy infrastructures. However, towards a more constraining legislation as REACH, the surface treatment & coating Industry is at the forefront in developing innovative and even more sustainable products.

La biominéralisation comme bioinspiration pour le développement de solutions anti-corrosion [Resumo]

    Publication
    by BASSEGUY, Regine
    Other Authors: Marques, Maria João

ABSTRACT: Corrosion is an important issue for alloys in natural seawater, where microorganisms can accelerate or mitigate corrosion. Al-Mg alloys are used for marine activities and various associated technologies. Here, the behaviour of AA5083 alloy was investigated in natural seawater with marine exposure lasting up to 50 days and detailing the first 8 days in two experimental series.Experimental work was carried out, including semi-field tests in natural seawater (biotic conditions) compared with abiotic conditions. The open circuit potential (OCP) measurements, during the immersion time, exhibited significantly different behaviours: an OCP downward displacement occurred under abiotic conditions, while, in biotic conditions OCP remained generally stable since the beginning of the immersion, revealing an inhibiting effect of the biological activity on the Al-Mg corrosion. This was accompanied by different surface modifications under biotic conditions: surface and cross-section characterization, performed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, showed less corrosion developed on the surface after 8-day immersion and formation of a protective layer during 50-day immersion. The present study shows that marine biological activity positively influences the Al alloy corrosion process, with surface modifications resulting in a protective effect counteracting the aggressiveness of chloride ions.

ABSTRACT: Steel structural systems in modular construction must be protected against corrosion and fire exposure. The durability of both protective properties plays a key role in ensuring long-term service life and minimizing maintenance costs. The present work aims to validate anticorrosive protection systems for steel structures, with and without fire protection properties, evaluating degradation mechanisms and assessing the compatibility of intumescent layers with anticor-rosive coatings, in terms of their impact on corrosion resistance and fire protec-tion properties.
