Several studies carried out in Portugal and other countries show the poor knowledge of the population and other health professionals about Radiology, Radiographer and radiation risks. Results suggest the need to improve communication on these issues throughout the community. In this way, the Portuguese association NUCLIRAD started in 2018 the programme "Radiology for All", with the creation and promotion of diverse contents directed to teach all age groups like children, adults and older people, with the objective of promoting Radiology and the Radiographer profession to the entire community.

Introduction: Health literacy is a topic of growing popularity given its relevance and impact on clinical outcomes. There are several health literacy assessment tools. The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q) is the most recently validated in Europe, it has a validated Portuguese version and it categorizes 4 different degrees of health literacy (excellent, sufficient, problematic and insufficient). Lower degrees of literacy are associated with worse incidence and severity of illness, hospital- ization rates and higher morbidity and mortality. The goal was to assess the health literacy level in relation to healthcare. Material and Methods: Application of the Portuguese ver- sion of the HLS-EU (HLS-PT) questionnaire to patients admitted to internal medicine care. All patients admitted to the internal medicine ward were initially included. Exclusion criteria were evidence of cognitive or clinical inability to answer the questionnaire. Results: 64 patients were surveyed. Study population was mostly male (57%) with an average age of 71 years, retired (71.8%) and with low level of education (56.2% with academic education up to junior school). The majority (68.7%) had a prob- lematic or insufficient health literacy. Conclusion: Although the authors recognize that both the environment of the questionnaire application and the demographic characteristics of this study differ from the national and European study, it is a disturbing result regarding health literacy in hospitalized individuals with chronic diseases.

Socio-cultural and technological advances have created anew paradigm of living and dying. Chronic disease, oftenmultiple and complex, creates prolonged states of vulnerability and dependence on health professionals. This vulnerability comes from a set of listable, time-consuming andchangeable needs. This renewed sense of medical professionalism is based on new methodologies for the chroniccondition and complexity management. We discuss and prepare the concept of Individual and Integrated Care Plan as areconciliation of multiple plans responding directly to specific needs. Planning is patient-centered, circumscribed to itsintrinsic value as a human being of unrepeatable historicalrelevance, in its preferences and diversity, and projecting itinto the future, where its anticipated needs are bridged by aninterdisciplinary team. Implemented support is adjustable topatient / family status change. We consider this work tool tocreate a solid framework in approaching the frail and complex patients.

Words and Concepts in Clinical Relation

    Publicação

Clinical relation is the most differentiating element in clinical practice. Communication is the most relevant element in the establishment of a relationship. Listening, asking, clarifying and debating are essential elements to build a relationship but they demand the use of proper words adjusted to the participant’s culture. Recent discussions about end of life issues showed that health care professionals, media and most of the citizens use incorrect words, with inappropriate meanings, incorrectly related to wrong concepts. In this context and assuming that communication is the basis of the good clinical relation it is urgent to clarify concepts and proper words for current practice to spare misunderstandings and wrong decisions. Authors have assumed the need of profound debate on proper words and correct concepts in clinical practice and current communication in Portuguese, so this text pretends to contribute to that clarification.

    Origem: Onco.News
Introduction: The process of communicating and managing bad news in oncology is complex and susceptible of being source of discomfort for all participants. Because of their proximity to the cancer patient and family when providing care, nurses are a key element in this process, being essential to develop competencies in this area. Objectives: Develop skills in breaking and managing bad news to the cancer patient and family, as well as to promote the improvement of nursing care. Methods: This work was based on a project methodology. Initially the process of breaking and managing bad news was identified as a training need on a personal level by myself and by the remaining nurses of the Internal Medicine Ward, where I was working at the time. Then was performed an internship in places considered having good practices in this subject. Throughout the journey were applied questionnaires, elaborated a Scoping Review with the Joanna Briggs Institute’s methodology, constructed documents to support the practice, made reflection on action, observed the practice of care, provided health care to cancer patient/family and performed training sessions to nurses. Results: Skills were acquired in the use of communication techniques, in the development of the relationship with cancer patient/family and in emotional management, allowing an advanced nursing practice. The nurses who received training considered the contributions positive to their practice, enhancing the importance of knowing about guidelines for breaking and managing bad news, the discussion of case studies and the reflection about the practice. Conclusions: It is possible to develop skills in this area based on professional experience and using this methodology, as long as nurses are aware of their training needs and are available to improve their practice. It is vital a greater investment in theoretical and practical training for the development of skills in communicating and managing bad news. The need for more scientific research in nursing dedicated to this subject is also underlined.

Comentadores Políticos: A Persuasão da Opinião Pública

    Publicação
    por Nunes, Denise Rodrigues
    Origem: uBibliorum
