The aim of the present study was to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of a true model of a swimmer hand with the thumb in different positions using numerical simulation techniques. A three-dimensional domain was created to simulate the fluid flow around three models of a swimmer hand, with the thumb in different positions: thumb fully abducted, partially abducted, and adducted. These three hand models were obtained through computerized tomography scans of an Olympic swimmer hand. Steady-state computational fluid dynamics analyses were performed using the Fluent(®) code. The forces estimated in each of the three hand models were decomposed into drag and lift coefficients. Angles of attack of hand models of 0°, 45° and 90°, with a sweep back angle of 0° were used for the calculations. The results showed that the position with the thumb adducted presented slightly higher values of drag coefficient compared with thumb abducted positions. Moreover, the position with the thumb fully abducted allowed increasing the lift coefficient of the hand at angles of attack of 0° and 45°. These results suggested that, for hand models in which the lift force can play an important role, the abduction of the thumb may be better, whereas at higher angles of attack, in which the drag force is dominant, the adduction of the thumb may be preferable. Key pointsNumerical simulation techniques can provide answers to problems which have been unobtainable using experimental methods. The computer tomography scans allowed the creation of a complete and true digital anatomic model of a swimmer hand. The position with the thumb adducted presented slightly higher values of drag coefficient than the positions with the thumb abducted. The position with the thumb fully abducted allowed increasing the lift coefficient of the hand at angles of attack of 0 and 45 degrees. For hand positions in which the lift force can play an important role the abduction of the thumb may be better whereas at higher angles of attack, in which the drag force is dominant, the adduction of the thumb may be preferable for swimmers.

A comprehensive and detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) modelling of air flow and heat transfer in an open refrigerated display cabinet (ORDC) is performed in this study. The physical-mathematical model considers the flow through the internal ducts, across fans and evaporator, and includes the thermal response of food products. The air humidity effect and thermal radiation heat transfer between surfaces are taken into account. Experimental tests were performed to characterize the phenomena near physical extremities and to validate the numerical predictions of air temperature, relative humidity, and velocity. Numerical and experimental results comparison reveals the predictive capabilities of the computational model for the optimized conception and development of this type of equipments. Numerical predictions are used to propose geometrical and functional parametric studies that improve thermal performance of the ORDC and consequently food safety.

The sector of information and communication technologies, especially telecommunications, has grown in a relentless way, leading to an increase in the number of necessary infrastructure to ensure the geographical coverage of the service, having the outdoor telecommunications cabinets (OTC) been an increasingly preferred choice of this type of infrastructure. These cabinets need cooling systems to maintain interior temperatures between desired values, but an effective cooling depends directly on the air flow inside. This paper includes the experimental results of the internal flow and heat transfer in a model a of real OTC, in order to characterize its thermal behavior. The internal air flow is visualized through experimental methods and compared with numerical predictions. The flow occurs mainly in turbulent regime, possessing greater magnitude on the back area of the OTC, where also exist some recirculation zones that can difficult an effective cooling. The results allow to conclude that forced ventilation is an effective method of OTC cooling, combined with low energy consumption.

In recent years, reducing energy consumption has been relentlessly pursued by researchers and policy makers with the purpose of achieving a more sustainable future. The demand for data storage in data centers has been steadily increasing, leading to an increase in size and therefore to consume more energy. Consequently, the reduction of the energy consumption of data center rooms is required and it is with this perspective that this paper is proposed. By using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), it is possible to model a three-dimensional model of the heat transfer and air flow in data centers, which allows forecasting the air speed and temperature range under diverse conditions of operation. In this paper, a CFD study of the thermal performance and airflow in a real data center processing room with 208 racks under di erent thermal loads and airflow velocities is proposed. The physical-mathematical model relies on the equations of mass, momentum and energy conservation. The fluid in this study is air and it is modeled as an ideal gas with constant properties. The model of the e ect of turbulence is made by employing a k–" standard model. The results indicate that it is possible to reduce the thermal load of the server racks by improving the thermal performance and airflow of the data center room, without a ecting the correct operation of the server racks located in the sensible regions of the room.

Oxygen/Hydrogen Combustion under Supercritical Conditions: A Numerical Study

    Publicação

The pursuit of enhanced propulsion system performance has driven the development of combustion technologies operating at increasingly higher pressures. Such conditions tipically exceed the thermodynamic critical thresholds of the propellants, giving rise to complex transcritical and supercritical flow regimes. The oxygen/hydrogen propellant combination has been extensively and successfully employed in liquid rocket propulsion, and, in the context of global decarbonization objectives, the clean, high-energy characteristics of hydrogen make it a promising candidate for future propulsion applications extending beyond rocketry. The modeling of shear coaxial injection of oxygen and hydrogen under supercritical conditions is addressed through a steady-state axisymmetric Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes formulation, with combustion treated using the Eddy-Dissipation-Concept model in conjunction with a detailed kinetic mechanism consisting of eight species and nineteen elementary reactions. The near-field region of the injector constitutes the primary focus of this work, as it is within this zone that the mixing efficiency is established, ultimately governing the overall combustion and engine performance. The simulations are carried out piecewise to ensure consistency thorugh all the simulation process. Firstly, non-reacting simulations are performed, incorporating both ideal- and real-gas models. After that, reacting simulations are performed in order to validate the developed numerical model against experimental data. Two main innovative contributions distinguish the present study from previous works on O2/H2 coaxial injection. The first concerns computational efficiency, achieved through a substantial reduction of the chamber length to the minimum extent necessary to ensure that the outlet boundary conditions do not affect the near-field region. In addition, the omission of the low-velocity recirculation zone located above the injector head was implemented to further reduce computational cost. The second innovation involves the inclusion of heattransfer effects in both the injector and chamber walls. In particular, the influence of the isothermal walls configuration on the injector is analyzed in light of the thermal disintegration mechanism of the inner jet, previously identified in the literature for cold-flow conditions under supercritical regimes. The numerical results demonstrated the capability of the developed framework to accurately model cryogenic O2/H2 injection and combustion under supercritical conditions. The non-reacting simulations established a robust numerical foundation and captured the key flow features, including the dense oxygen core and the surrounding high-velocity hydrogen stream. The incorporation of real-gas effects proved essential, as the ideal-gas assumption led to significant deviations in core length and mixing behavior. In the reacting regime, the real-gas model reproduced the experimental axial temperature profile and flame structure with good accuracy, outperforming the ideal-gas formulation and yielding results comparable to those reported in the literature, thereby confirming its suitability for high-pressure combustion modeling.

A Data Centre is a physical space that groups together computer equipment such as servers, storage arrays, among other equipment. It can be used for storage, processing and data protection. The majority of data centres operate 24 hours a day, and must provide the user with guarantees in terms of security and performance. Energy consumption is therefore permanent and the level of assistance and maintenance high. Data Centres have an ecological impact that is almost invisible to many users. In this paper a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the airflow and thermal distribution of a real data centre room with 208 racks is proposed. Two case studies are presented and simulated with a high thermal load subjected to the minimum and maximum air flow velocity, respectively. The objective is to assess if the computer room air conditioning unit (CRAC) can cool the racks of the data centre in order to efficiently refrigerate all the hot spots.

A detailed CFD modelling of an open refrigerated display cabinet has been formulated in a previous study. Some modifications are introduced in order to perform parametric studies dealing with low-cost geometrical and functional characteristics for improvement of the global performance and energy efficiency. The parametric studies are devoted to the analysis of the thermal response and behaviour inside the food conservation space influenced by (1) air flow rate through the evaporator heat exchanger; (2) air curtain behaviour; (3) hole dimensions and distribution of the back panel; (4) discharge and return grilles angles; and (5) flow deflectors inside the internal duct. The analysis of the numerical predictions from the parametric studies allows the development of an optimized model for the conception of an open refrigerated display cabinet with a more adequate configuration. The numerical predictions of the optimized model show lower product temperature and reduced electrical energy consumption, allowing the improvement of the food safety and the energy rationalization of the refrigeration equipment.

Nowadays the underwater gliding after the starts and the turns plays a major role in the overall swimming performance. Hence, minimizing hydrodynamic drag during the underwater phases should be a main aim during swimming. Indeed, there are several postures that swimmers can assume during the underwater gliding, although experimental results were not conclusive concerning the best body position to accomplish this aim. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyse the effect in hydrodynamic drag forces of using different body positions during gliding through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology. For this purpose, two-dimensional models of the human body in steady flow conditions were studied. Two-dimensional virtual models had been created: (i) a prone position with the arms extended at the front of the body; (ii) a prone position with the arms placed alongside the trunk; (iii) a lateral position with the arms extended at the front and; (iv) a dorsal position with the arms extended at the front. The drag forces were computed between speeds of 1.6 m/s and 2 m/s in a two-dimensional Fluent(®) analysis. The positions with the arms extended at the front presented lower drag values than the position with the arms aside the trunk. The lateral position was the one in which the drag was lower and seems to be the one that should be adopted during the gliding after starts and turns.

Post-harvest cold storage of peaches is an essential element to maintain the quality of the fruits without any loss. This work aims to present a CFD model, to predict airflow patterns and temperature profiles in ventilated packaging systems, during the forced-air cooling of Peaches stored in a cold chamber. Transient CFD simulations are performed for the chamber containing four ventilated boxes and the evaluation of the results show that the temperature removal near the vent holes and the hand holes is relatively high when compared to other regions of the packaging box. This preliminary study reveals the airflow behavior develop an uneven temperature distribution within the box. To overcome the flaws, future work is focused on modifying the vent hole design to improve the airflow phenomenon to maintain the temperature homogeneity throughout the box.

Decentralized energy is growing in importance with time. The electricity being needed even in the most remote places, far from power stations, increases the importance of small power production devices such as micro-hydro devices like turbines. In this research, the velocity field in a meandering channel is studied in its natural conditions and with the introduction of spur-dikes, structures that prevent bank erosion, a natural phenomenon observed in meandering channels, with the use of computational fluid dynamics software. With the objective of improving the power production by investigating the changes of the flume velocities with the introduction of spur-dikes, one test without any spur-dike and three tests with it were conducted. Good results were reached, with velocities increasing between 10 to 20% with the introduction of these structures. In certain cases, the increase in power production can reach up to 85% than in a normal situation without spur-dikes in the river.
