    Publication
by Bacca Ibarra, Rolando Tito Libio
    Origin: Oasisbr
The use of pheromone traps was tested for monitoring of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). Insect sampling was carried out in seven coffee plantations under different agronomic conditions in two regions - the Triângulo Mineiro and the Zona da Mata, both in the state of Minas Gerais. The sampling period ranged from 6 to 20 months. The locality significantly affected male capture and among the weather variables analyzed, the decrease in the average temperature favored higher infestations of L. coffeella in coffee plants and higher male capture. A positive relationship between male capture and % of leaves mined (R2 =0.79) was observed in the Triângulo Mineiro and in Zona da Mata this relationship was weak, although significant (R2 =0.06). In this last region, a positive and significant correlation between males captured and pest eggs was observed (R2 =0.34). Using geostatistical analysis, we determined at what distance captures were independent from other traps. Traps were placed in groups of 12 with distances among traps per group of either 2, 5, 10, 15, or 30 m. Traps were checked for males every 4 days during 16 days. We found interference between traps when inter-trap distances were shorter than 10 m. The range and magnitude of spatial dependence varied considerably among each sampling date and wind direction. For directions of 45º and 135º, the traps should be placed 110 m and 177 m apart, respectively to obtain spatially independent counts and therefore representative samplings for assessing the insect population in the area. We sampled males of L. coffeella in 12 evaluations every eight days. Taylor s power law and frequency distribution methods were used to adjust the data of male capture of L. coffeella to a binomial negative distribution. A common K was obtained and a single conventional sampling plan was determined using 8 traps in an area of 30 ha with a 25% precision. Kriging-generated maps allowed the simulation of male captures for 8, 12 and 20 traps per 30 ha and the results were compared with those obtained with absolute sampling, obtaining R2-values of 0.30, 0.57 and 0.60 respectively. The results of this study suggest that there is a significant correlation between the male capture by pheromone traps and the population density of L coffeella, emphasizing the potential of pheromone traps for monitoring the coffee leaf miner, indicated that a trap density of one pheromone trap for every 4 ha would be suitable for monitoring the coffee leaf miner.

    Publication
    by Palacio, Zulma Nancy Gil
    Origin: Oasisbr
The study of the movement of insects in their natural habitat is essential to understand its basic biology, demography and ethology, moreover, provides important information on the mechanisms of dispersal of species and their interaction with environmental factors. This type of study also helps in optimization of integrated management programs and planning of field experiments. The objective of this thesis was to develop an easily applicable methodology for studying the movement of the coffee berry borer under natural conditions, was determined for both (i) the variability and genetic structure of populations of the coffee berry borer in Brazil, with the aim of identifying molecular markers, (ii) developed a method to evaluate the movement of H. hampei, using molecular marker and (iii) estimated the distance of flight of this insect. The study was conducted in Brazil and Colombia, in Brazil, we evaluated the variability and genetic structure of populations of the coffee berry borer using AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism,), the results showed a low genetic variability and little differentiation with the Colombian population. Therefore, studies for the movement of H. hampei, we used molecular markers designed previously and Ethiopian populations evaluated in the populations of Colombia. The development of the method to estimate the movement of the coffee berry borer, was held on a farm in the central Colombian coffee, from October 2011 to February 2012, in an experimental area of 2353 plants of (Coffea arabica var. Colombia), distributed in approximately 6644 m2. The recaptures were obtained using coffee beans as traps. The results showed that the microsatellite molecular marker HHK. 1.6 allowed reliable assessments of the movement of populations in the coffee berry borer through time and across generations of the insect. The largest recaptures occurred within a radius of less than 40 m away from the central point of release, the maximum distance traveled to coffee berry borer was 65 m and the function that best describes this relationship, recaptured average number of borer per tree depending on the distance is Ŷ=αβxi where Y is the average of borers per tree recaptured and X the distance expressed in meters. Application of this methodology for studying the movement of H. hampei in different ecological and agronomic conditions of the crop must be viable and help to predict the behavior of this insect.

As barreiras fitossanitárias interestaduais no Brasil: Localização e avaliação técnica

    Publication
    by Hilman, Ricardo
    Origin: Oasisbr
The interstate phytosanitary barriers (fixed and mobile) have an important role in reducing the risk of dissemination of regulated pests and they also contribute to meeting the phytosanitary requirements from importing countries, being part of an important system of traceability and of a national process of vegetable transit control. Therefore a survey of the existing interstate barriers, a technical evaluation and an evaluation of the working conditions is essential for vegetal transit in Brazil, in order to find possible flaws and improve them. This was the main intention of this study which as well as carrying out the geographical and structural survey of the interstate barriers, it evaluated their functional structure using economic and technical criteria. To this end, 22 phytosanitary barriers of ten states and four regions were visited in loco and also evaluated the forms that were sent to all the state defense departments. The results showed that in Brazil there are 310 interstate fixed barriers in 27 units of the federation. The evaluation concerning technical conditions and the functioning of the barriers looked into the items: time of functioning, numbers of civil servants, adequate structure, training, procedure manual and the number of barriers, indicated that they do not meet the needs related to the actions of inspection for which they are intended and that their role of phytosanitary control should be reconsidered. There are States where the barriers were totally deactivated and others where the functioning is precarious, with only bureaucratic action and unable to stop the transit of regulated pests. An analysis of the connection between the contract resources passed through MAPA and the evaluated items at the state barriers showed a low association, indicating that the transfer of funds should also be reconsidered and better planned. In conclusion, it can be said that the interstate phytosanitary barriers do not fulfill their main role of reducing the risk of pest dissemination, by limiting themselves to the verification of Vegetal transit documents.
