The concepts about sustainable development include the environmental, economic and social sustainability, emphasizing the quality of life of people and communities. In the case of Brazil, the investment in this field can be considered as being recent in what to the scientific research is concerned. The country does not have a wide database regarding its five regions, capable of covering aspects such as climate, along with the social, cultural and economic reality. Furthermore, in Brazil does not yet exist an assessment tool that may be able to answer to all the country's questions. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to the development of new assessment strategies by introducing the national panorama of certified buildings and taking into account the current conditions and the differences between the five main regions in which the country is divided: Midwest, Northeast, North, South and Southeast. It is intended to help the professionals that work on this subject and to support sustainable development in the Construction Industry in Brazil.

Decades ago, the only requirement to construct a building was to give men the right conditions for the execution of their work or leisure activities. With the development of knowledge about the internal and external environments of buildings, other requirements have been added such as the issue of user comfort. New construction techniques have been incorporated and new products have been created to improve internal environment comfort. This research addressed the importance of using indicators related to environmental comfort in sustainability assessment tools applied to school buildings. It also considered the importance of environmental issues for the good performance of human beings, and the harmonious coexistence of the comfort indicators indoor air quality, thermal comfort, visual comfort, acoustic comfort and ergonomic comfort based on data gathered in research carried out with users of high schools (only students). This research was carried out in two different cities of different countries, Guimarães (Portugal) and Juiz de Fora (Brazil), that have similar characteristics of teaching standards and climate conditions (temperature and air humidity). In this study, interviews were made through questionnaires and, later, the information collected was analyzed. This study demonstrates the need to include an ergonomic indicator for school buildings in sustainability assessment tools.

Internationally there are validated instruments that are used on a large scale to verify the information literacy of individuals in different contexts. Their results serve as a diagnostic for the planning and implementation of information literacy activities. In Brazil there is no validated assessment tools of information literacy. An analysis of contents of four international instruments attached to the upper level educational institutions duly recognized in the literature of the field and validated. The results will be presented related to information literacy addressed in these instruments. It was found that the instruments analyzed the skills focused on the identification of terms of the informational needs, the preparation and construction of search strategies available in parameter two of the Association of College and Research Libraries; differentiation of information sources (parameter one); evaluation and selection of informational sources and selection of the theme searched information (parameter three); and, finally, the abilities of the ethical issue related to use of the information (parameter five). The parameter four, which is facing the communication of information, was not addressed by the instruments. It was concluded that there is a concern of those responsible for preparing the instruments covered with more traditional technical aspects of training users and aspects of information literacy at the expense of ethical and aesthetic aspects.

Abstract Introduction: Chronic pain CP negatively impacts patients’ physical and psychological status. Thus, it has the potential to affect every aspect of everyday life. In Portugal, CP is a major public health problem that affects roughly 36.7% of adults. Nevertheless, assessment of this condition is still far from ideal. A Portuguese study showed that most of last year’s medical students and first-year residents did not routinely assess pain. Additionally, the best-known pain assessment tools are the ones that focus only on pain intensity, thus disregarding the multidimensional nature of pain. Objectives: This study aims to review pain assessment tools that consider the nature of pain and its impact on patients’ functionality. The ultimate goal is to increase the knowledge and dissemination of such tools. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with a panel of 29 Portuguese physicians specialized in family medicine and orthopaedics. Several pain assessment tools were debated regarding applicability, practicality, and relevance. After group discussion, five pain assessment tools were considered particularly relevant. Results: The characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of five pain assessment tools ACT-UP, CAPA, Barthel index, BPI, and EQ-5D, and the need for their applicability in the family medicine clinical practice are summarized and highlighted. Functional assessment of CP patients is a key step to deciding the most adequate treatment regimen since the individual nature of patients will cause them to be differently affected by distinct limitations, even if the intensity of pain is similar. Conclusion: The implementation use of these tools in clinical practice will be crucial for the improvement of CP management.
