    by Lotufo, Júlia Jenior
    Origin: Oasisbr

Moving across page, stage, canvas: theatrical dance as a form of intermedial translation

    Publication
    by Montesi, Vanessa
This thesis examines two works of contemporary dance, Marie Chouinard’s Jérôme Bosch: Le Jardin des Délices (2016) and Mathieu Geffré’s choreography for the ESD company Froth on the Daydream (2018), as examples of intermedial translations into dance. In doing so, it proposes a conceptualization of translation through the lens of theatrical dance. In the last decade, the concepts of multimodality and intermediality have prompted a revision of inherited notions of text, language, and translation. This has led translation scholars to stretch their definition of translation so as to include text produced in and through other media, including dance. A number of articles and book chapters from the fields of Dance, Literary, Intermedial and Translation Studies have been published that make the case for the usefulness of the concept of translation for interpreting dance performances. Building on these works, this thesis reverses the question and asks how theatrical dance can help us understand intermedial translation. It does so by mapping the “implicative complex” (Tyulenev, 2010: 241-242) of dance, such as creativity, ephemerality, and the dramaturgy of bodies, onto the realm of translation. The theoretical framework is tested on two very different case studies: Chouinard’s choreography is based on Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, while Geffré’s on Boris Vian’s novel L’Écume de Jours. The methodology combines live attendance at the performances with footage analysis and ethnographic methods such as semi-structured interviews and participant observations. The first case-study focuses on issues of agency in translation, while the second looks at the way in which intermedial translations constitute “performative acts of memory” (Plate and Smelik, 2013: 2), comparing Geffré’s choreography with previous intermedial translations of Vian’s novel into film, opera, and graphic novel. Translation emerges as a creative and corporeal (and therefore political) practice deeply intertwined with issues of memory and struggles for representation. The analysis of the case-studies, together with the theoretical work that precedes it, contributes towards a redefinition of translation within the field of Translation Studies.

[Des]Segredo: áudio performance, deriva e ressonância

    Publication
    by Rodrigues, Dárida Angélica
This work of practical and theoretical investigation, aims to present the empirical exploration of the artistic creation in progress: the project [Des]segredo, which consists in the composition of site specific audio performance pieces, of conscious conducive and dreamlike narrative, delegated to the public, having the act of walking as a basic premise and also by creating a time/space momentum to share a secret. For this purpose, the concept of Drift is investigated, through its linguistic meaning, looking at the errant discovery of the flaneur and also observing, from the situationist bias and its aspirations for social transformation and for an emancipated political engagement, the potentiality of the participatory and relational nature of these movements, also present in the work of some selected artists, presented as important references. The possibility of expansion of the operative territories of Art in the context of wandering and participation is also observed. The problematic around the construction of an imaginary and unusual universe, that distances itself from the colloquial realism, to create introspective landscapes and relational fables, in the guided audio performances, is raised to the extent that they are covered in a utopian sound environment, where the displacement of the artist or of the one who guides, the work in movement and successively, of the spectators, is an integral part of the concept. This work therefore incorporates, as a fundamental element, another important premise: the power of the voice, as an affective medium for abstraction and expansion of consciousness and spiritual inquiry. In a first movement, this thesis develops some theoretical considerations about the concept and social function of the Secret and its unfolding, like the concept of Enigma, and then goes through the notions of Game and investigates the mode of poetic expression, and then analyzes, in parallel with the Drift, the questions raised by the paradigmatic need to come from the concreteness of space to the dematerialization of the real and of the Art itself, to the sensorial edification of a fantastic and affective environment that is ready to the transplantation of its creative matrix, to the territories in which it naturally expands, in time, space and resonance.

Desafios da curadoria : criação da exposição online Mulheres e Inserções Digitais

    Publication
by Dias, Lara Alvares de Sosa
We live in the midst of a society immersed in the effects of digital content technology. One of the issues to think about the actuality arising from this moment concerns the exploration and the tools used in the networked environment, still in parameters based on activities whose first experience came from the real, in the empirical field. It is in the sense of investigation and exploration of this space that this research is applied to the process of online curation, the creation of the website, as an online platform. The project was created as an alternative to nonpresential times, the search for other ways to exhibit through the assembly of the online exhibition Mulheres e Inserções Digitais. The curatorship applied in the network system takes into account the virtual space and in this field, there are countless possibilities for curators to assert themselves in the field of arts. Thus, it is significant to follow a path about this specific practice, the creation of the online exhibition as an alternative support, how it is carried out and the questions it raises.

    Publication
    by Tuna, Cátia Sofia Ferreira

    Publication
    by Piva, Bruno Leal

John Cage : a obra indeterminada

    Publication
by Vieira, Ana Luísa Valdeira da Silva Pereira
Existirá acaso no mundo?

    Publication
    by Portugal, Diego Braga
This project explores the heritage of Ricardo Wagner Braga, my uncle - who was chasing me around the house, dressed as a witch - as a possibility of creating an updated, festive and erotic cartography of the world. The inheritance is a box with personal archives collected in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The geographical collection includes seventeen Brazilian states (Amazonas, Pará, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Paraiba, Ceará, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Federal District, Goiás, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul); and fourteen countries (Angola, Chile, United States of America, Peru, Panama, Portugal, Canada, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, England, Israel, Iraq and Switzerland). This collection, among the objects, contains: two hundred and fifty-four city postcards, written and stamped, exchanged with about one hundred and sixty women and men (80% men, 90% Brazilians); two hundred and fifty postcards from cities with no stamp and signature; identity documents; love letters; longing letters; personal photographs; photographs of ‘male mermaids’; diary sheets; a drawing of "Miss Universe"; postcards sent by me; Christmas' cards; ‘saints of death’; among others. This project - based on concepts by Clarice Lispector, Giorgio Agamben, Georges Bataille and Mikhail Bakhtin - proposes to be a utopian gesture to update Ricardo's archives and heritage, deceased as a result of AIDS, in the year two thousand and eleven. This gesture was made with Love and eight movements: four videos, three performances and the writing itself. These movements cover thirty-three percent of all inheritance and contain multiple possibilities: material; immaterials; aesthetic; iconographic; mythological; poetic; spiritual; magical and intuitive. I called this gesture "Geography of Love." An atlas - cathartic, liberating and magical, like the fairy tales - that celebrates our dead and ancestors.
