Criminal reactions to drug-using offenders: a systematic review of the effect of treatment and/or punishment on reduction of drug use and/or criminal recidivism
Publicationby Tomaz, VeraOther Authors: Moreira, Diana; Cruz, Olga SouzaThe association between substance use and crime is very common, but complex. Several countries have found strategies to face drug abuse and criminality that may exist associated to it, seeking to reduce overcrowded prisons and to promote the reductions of criminal recidivism and/or substance use. Through the guidelines of PRISMA, a systematic review was conducted with the aim to explore the different criminal reactions to individuals who use substances and are involved in the criminal justice system, namely the role of treatment and/or punishment in the reduction of crime recidivism and/or drug (ab)use. After gathering the following criteria of inclusion (individuals who use substances and are involved in the criminal justice system, between 18 and 65 years old, regardless of gender; consumers of licit/illicit psychoactive substances; without psychopathology not related with use/abuse of drugs; treatment programs; judicial interventions) the database found 155 articles between 1971 and 2022 from which 110 were selected for analysis (57 are from Academic Search Complete, 28 from PsycInfo, 10 from Academic Search Ultimate, seven from Sociology Source Ultimate, four from Business Source Complete, two from Criminal Justice Abstracts, and two from PsycArticles); additional records were included trough manual search. From these studies, 23 articles were included, as they answered the research question, and therefore, constitute the final sample of this revision. The results indicate treatment as an effective response of the criminal justice system in the reduction of criminal recidivism and/or drug use, addressing the criminogenic effect of reclusion/imprisonment. Therefore, interventions that privilege treatment should be chosen, although there are still gaps in terms of evaluation, monitoring and scientific publications regarding the effectiveness of treatment in this population. -

Sensory processing of time and space in autistic children
Publicationby Coelho, FranzOther Authors: Rando, Belén; Salgado, Mariana; Abreu, Ana MariaBackground/Objectives: Autism is characterized by atypical sensory processing, which affects spatial and temporal perception. Here, we explore sensory processing in children with autism, focusing on visuospatial and temporal tasks across visual and auditory modalities. Methods: Ninety-two children aged 4 to 6 participated, divided into three groups: autism (n = 32), neurotypical chronological age-matched controls (n = 28), and neurotypical developmental age-matched controls (n = 32). The autism group consisted of high-functioning children (26 boys). The participants completed computer-based tasks requiring spatial and temporal processing. Response accuracy and reaction times were recorded. Results: The autism group demonstrated higher accuracy in temporal tasks (visual and auditory modalities) and comparable accuracy in visuospatial modality, but slower response times in all tasks compared to both neurotypical controls. These results suggest a strategy that prioritizes accuracy over speed, while preserving spatial and temporal processing in autism. Conclusions: These findings suggest that temporal processing, rather than the sensory modality, drives decision-making strategies in children with autism. Our findings highlight the need for interventions aligned with autistic children’s slower but accurate processing style to support social interaction and reduce stress. In a fast-paced digitalized world, autistic children might benefit from slower, balanced, and inclusive, evidence-based approaches that align with their cognitive rhythm and reduce overstimulation. By incorporating these unique strategies, targeted programs can enhance the quality of life and adaptive skills of children with autism, thereby fostering better integration into social and sensory-rich environments. -

Clinical supervision in the integration of nursing students in paediatric clinical education: an experience report
Publicationby Albuquerque, DianaOther Authors: Condeço, LuísIntroduction: To ensure a positive and enriching clinical experience for nursing students, it is essential to reflect on how to make their integration into practice more welcoming and educational. Objective: To reflect on the clinical supervision practices used during the integration of students in a paediatric setting, aiming to identify facilitating factors and areas for improvement. Methods: Experience report based on Donald Schön’s reflective concepts. A nurse specialised in child health supervised students in a paediatric hospital unit, collecting and analysing data through a supervision diary. Results: Facilitating factors included the presence and support of teachers and clinical supervisors, clear communication, defined expectations, and a welcoming, well-organised physical environment. Opportunities for improvement included the need for greater emotional preparation, more effective communication strategies, and stronger orientation during the first days of the placement. Conclusion: Based on the barriers and facilitating factors identified through reflective analysis, the implementation of a structured clinical supervision programme is recommended. This should include clear objectives, individualised support, and continuous feedback to enhance student integration into paediatric clinical education. Although this report reflects a single supervisory context, the insights gained may inform future improvements in supervision strategies and contribute to the development of safe, competent, and emotionally prepared nursing professionals. -

Synthesis and characterization of new oligosaccharides with prebiotic activity
Publicationby Montenegro, Maria Inês PereiraThe importance of human intestinal microbiota in maintaining host health is well-known and in the past few decades, the consumer’s awareness for healthier foods has increased. There are several strategies to stimulate the proliferation of beneficial intestinal bacteria, including the consumption of prebiotics. Currently, there is a range of prebiotic carbohydrates on the market, most of them isolated from plant polysaccharides such as inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) but there is an increasing interest in the development of new prebiotics, with added functionality. In this sense, chitosan, which is a polysaccharide composed of glucosamine (GlcN) and N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) units, linked by β (1→4) bonds, presents a structure very similar to prebiotic glucooligosaccharides. The main difference is the presence of amino groups, which are the cause of antimicrobial effect of chitosan. Chemical modification of chitosan by substitution of its amino groups could eliminate the antimicrobial effect and convert chitosan in a new interesting prebiotic ingredient. Thus, the objective of the present work is to chemically modify chitosan to be used in the food industry as prebiotic ingredient. In order to achieve this objective, the optimization of the synthesis of chitosan derivatives with glucose by the Maillard reaction and enzymatic hydrolysis, was conducted and the obtained purified derivatives were assayed for molar mass distribution and structural characterization by Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR) and colloid titration. The purified product was assayed for its prebiotic potential by means of in vitro fermentability assays performed with individual microbial strains and human faecal inocula. The experimental data showed that the refined chitooligosaccharide (COS) derivatives obtained in this work had potential prebiotic effects, inducing changes in both the pattern of generated metabolic products and the count of Bifidobacterium, which might contribute to a healthy intestinal environment. Finally, the in vitro cytotoxicity of the COS derivatives synthesized was performed by flow cytometry. The results obtained demonstrated that the COS derivatives are biocompatible molecules. Also, the assay showed that the substitution of the amino groups decreased the cytotoxicity of the COS derivatives when compared to unmodified COS. Nevertheless, further studies are recommended, mainly in vivo tests, to eventually confirm these in vitro results.
